Senior Safety Specialist
Reports to:
Safety Manager
Job Summary:
The Senior Safety Specialist supports the implementation, oversight, and continuous improvement of Shapiro & Duncan’s safety program. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; investigates accidents, injuries, and near‑misses; and develops methods to prevent hazard exposure, injuries, and property damage. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast‑paced environment, exercises sound independent judgment, and fosters a strong safety culture across all project sites.
Accountability & Authority:
The Senior Safety Specialist reports to the Safety Manager or their designee. Responsibilities include purchasing supplies, equipment, training, and consulting services from vendors up to pre‑established limits; authority to discipline employees, bar contractors, and issue cease‑work orders for non‑compliance; and accountability for compliance, reporting, licensing, and training of employees and subcontractors pursuant to applicable regulations.
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent (experience may substitute for education)
- Valid Driver’s License
- Current First Aid/CPR Certification
- OSHA 30‑Hour completed
- OSHA 510/500 and OSHA 511/501 (Instructor Certification for Construction and General Industry preferred)
- CHST preferred
- Must be able to pass background checks required for local, state, and federal government projects
- Minimum 5 years of progressive construction safety, including safety programs, training, compliance, and field operations.
- Extensive knowledge of EPA, NIOSH, ANSI, OSHA 29 CFR 1910 & 1926 standards.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations and claims management preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Able to walk, stand, bend, climb, crawl, and work in confined spaces, at heights, and in temperature extremes.
- Able to lift up to 75 lbs. occasionally.
- Serve as designated competent person on all Shapiro & Duncan job sites and customer locations.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve safety policies, procedures, and the safety management system.
- Lead and mentor junior safety professionals and field personnel.
- Proactive safety leadership with emphasis on precursor identification and risk mitigation.
- Maintain and administer the company’s drug testing program, including medical record retention.
- Conduct impartial investigations of incidents, near‑misses, and injuries; perform root‑cause analysis and recommend corrective actions.
- Perform job site inspections and submit written reports; prepare monthly summary reports for all sites visited.
- Coordinate work area assessments and program evaluations to identify and mitigate hazardous conditions.
- Perform trend analysis and present findings to management.
- Act as company representative during OSHA and other regulatory compliance inspections.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs; coordinate certifications (fall protection, rigging, confined space, silica, Haz Com, etc.).
- Provide new‑employee health and safety orientations.
- Coach employees on pre‑task analysis and toolbox talks to ensure effectiveness.
- Verify subcontractor training and compliance with all applicable equipment requirements.
- Disseminate safety alerts, bulletins, best practices, and corrective actions to all employees.
- Stay current on industry regulations and legislation and communicate updates to the team.
