Job Description
Senior Pressure Vessels/Tanks Specialist – responsible for guiding the design and specification of tanks, pressure vessels, and related pressure‑retaining components. The role includes identifying requirements, performing design calculations, and selecting and specifying tanks and pressure vessels to ensure compliance with technical specifications and program/project requirements. The specialist also provides expert opinions, recommends vessel selection, and offers advice on all aspects of vessel performance, maintenance strategy, and cost.
Responsibilities- Plan and oversee analyses to assess tank and pressure vessel components for functional performance and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Supervise calculations using hand techniques and analytical tools for structural, thermal, hydraulic, and other scoping analyses.
- Develop and manage engineering change implementation in line with approved procedures.
- Assist and guide design of mechanical systems within the specialist’s expertise.
- Select components based on requirements, interfaces, design bases, and criteria while coordinating with stakeholders and identifying applicable industry codes.
- Compose and develop design documentation, including design basis documents, technical reports, calculations, design descriptions, and drawings.
- Author and maintain X-energy design standards and guides related to tank and pressure vessel design, specification, and selection.
- Demonstrate project management skills to organize and lead external engineering partners.
- Develop technical content to support procurement of materials, equipment, and services, and review procured items for compliance with contract specifications.
- Review engineering documentation for technical correctness, participate in design reviews, and provide independent reviews of engineering deliverables.
- Support the safety culture, integrate quality into engineering processes, and ensure compliance with the Quality Assurance Program.
- Identify, document, report, and manage risks related to engineering and design scope.
- Maintain professional demeanor in all communications and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Provide acceptance reviews of engineering deliverables and data.
- Oversight and documentation of applicable requirements, interfaces, design basis, and criteria.
- Teach and mentor junior team members.
- Stay abreast of industry and academic trends, breakthroughs, and best practices.
- Collaborate with engineering leadership to set technical direction, develop technology roadmaps, and establish design criteria.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.
- Experience:
Level V – 15+ years of relevant experience;
Level VI – 20+ years. - Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related ABET‑accredited field required.
- Master’s degree may substitute for two years of experience;
Ph.D. may substitute for three years. - Experience with mechanical process and/or commercial power generation equipment design, procurement, installation, and operation.
- Proof of designing and specifying pressure vessels and tanks based on system needs, considering impacts throughout life cycle.
- Experience authoring and maintaining design standards and guides for tanks and pressure vessels.
- Systems or design engineering experience in successful mechanical system development projects.
- Experience with mechanical systems such as steam, feedwater, condensate, HVAC, fire protection, drainage, compressed air, services, water‑based systems, or nuclear systems.
- Knowledge of best practices for system requirements management and verification.
- Knowledge of systems engineering processes and relevant nuclear power plant licensing, regulatory, quality, and safety requirements.
- Expertise in stress analysis, shell theory, nozzle reinforcement, flange design, support structure design, static and dynamic loads, fatigue analysis, thermal stresses, and mechanical property considerations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Sections III and VIII), API 650/620, and other relevant codes and standards.
