Engineer V, Risk Informed Safety Analysis

Job Description

This role is responsible for performing safety analysis and/or probabilistic risk assessments (PRA) in accordance with the appropriate industry standards and guidance, authoring and reviewing safety analysis/PRA-related documents, and providing results and insights to the design of X-energy technologies. The role will use software to create and maintain models that represent the design of X-energy projects and technologies, and produce and review calculation documents that support and control the PRA or safety analysis model files.

These models are applied to a range of applications to support the design and future operation of X-energy projects and technologies.

• Perform various safety analyses in one or more of the following areas:
  • Probabilistic Risk Assessment
    • Follow the guidance of ASME/ANS RA-S-1.4-2021 and other applicable industry standards in creating and maintaining PRA models and supporting calculation documents.
    • Revise and review PRA documents.
    • Follow the guidance of PRA-dependent applications (e.g., NEI 18-04) to acquire risk insights that inform design and licensing.
    • Develop proficiency in PRA-related software (e.g., EPRI’s Phoenix Architect) per X-energy procedures, ensuring correct software version usage, verifying software, and documenting limitations.
    • Perform main PRA tasks including event tree and fault tree development and associated documentation.
    • Develop screening methods, risk‑informed supplemental evaluations, and/or PRA models for varying plant operating modes, radionuclide sources, hazards, and multi‑reactor considerations.
• Able to show increasing proficiency interpreting, applying, and assessing standards.
• Collaborate and communicate with key stakeholders in engineering, project leadership, and across the safety analysis team to provide frequent updates, maintain priorities and adapt to change, and raise concerns when project problems or timelines arise.
• Provide engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
• Contribute to team decision‑making to achieve business goals through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; handle changing priorities and differing situations; make decisions that may affect the team.
• Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well‑defined problems and analyses of increasing scope and complexity.
• Conduct engineering and related studies; complete routine projects with minimal oversight while independently managing project schedules and interfaces.
• Develop and maintain safety basis documents and safety basis program procedures.
• Identify and describe the interrelationship of safety basis requirements with existing and new designs and operations.
• Develop, maintain, and produce technical documentation to inform system/subsystem requirements and specifications.
• Interface with customers and regulators in nuclear safety reviews and technical working group meetings to comply with requirements and meet project objectives.
• Maintain professional demeanor and behavior in all forms of communication.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (nuclear, chemical, mechanical, etc.) from an ABET accredited university.

• Experience with internal and external hazard modeling.

The salary range for this position is: $163,800 – $273,000. Individual candidates who meet the job requirements will be offered a salary within this range based on their education, training, experience, and qualifications. Compensation may vary by location and is based on applicable state law.
