THIS IS AN ENTRY-LEVEL POSITION WITH PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES.

MCDOT seeks an Engineer III, Grade 25, for its Transportation Management Section, within the Division of Traffic Engineering & Operations. This position may be underfilled at the Engineer II, Grade 22. This position will be based within the Division of Traffic Engineering and Operations (DTEO), under the Traffic Engineering Studies Section.

The Division of Traffic Engineering & Operations (DTEO) is looking for a candidate to provide traffic engineering support for the Traffic Engineering Studies Section, which includes developing neighborhood traffic calming treatments on residential roadways, enhancing pedestrian safety by implementing traffic engineering treatments near schools and within school walking boundaries/walksheds, and advancing traffic calming improvements to reduce/eliminate serious injury and fatal crashes along all County-maintained roadways, in support of the County's Vision Zero goals.

Duties include:
  • Investigating and resolving school-related safety improvement requests from government agencies, residents, County Council, County Executive's Office, and community groups and associations.
  • Reviewing new capital improvement projects and designs/traffic reports related to proposed County developments.
  • Performing and reviewing consultant-performed road safety audits and walkability studies.
  • Designing and reviewing consultant-designed traffic engineering plans.
  • Managing and coordinating construction activities related to DTEO’s traffic engineering safety improvements, Countywide.

The candidate must be able to occasionally work rotating shifts on weekdays and weekends and periodically attend virtual and in-person night meetings related to DTEO projects or initiatives advanced by state or local agencies within the County.

The candidate must be able to occasionally perform field work, near and in roadways with active traffic, in a variety of environmental conditions, including hot and cold temperatures.

If filled at the Engineer II level:
  • Experience: One (1) year of experience in an engineering field appropriate to transportation, traffic, and/or construction.
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or a related discipline appropriate to the assigned position, such as Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering. Registration as a Professional Engineer may substitute for the degree.
  • Equivalency
    :
    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, provided such combination includes at least sixty (60) accredited semester hours (or an equivalent amount of accredited professional training) in engineering or related courses appropriate to the assigned position.
If filled at the Engineer III level:
  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience in an engineering field appropriate to transportation, traffic, and/or construction.
  • Education
    :
    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or a related discipline appropriate to the assigned position, such as Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering. Registration as a Professional Engineer may substitute for the degree.
  • Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, provided such combination includes at least sixty (60) accredited semester hours (or an equivalent amount of accredited professional training) in engineering or related courses appropriate to the assigned position.
