Sign language and cued speech transliterators throughout Montgomery County to facilitate communication among deaf and hard of hearing kindergarten through 21 year old students and their hearing peers, teachers, parents and other personnel involved in a mainstreamed student's education through the act of interpretation and transliteration. Must be able to interpret and transliterate at a normal conversational rate. Preference given to a candidate who has graduated from an accredited interpreter training program or equivalent.

Previous experience in an educational setting preferred. Certification preferred but not required.

SUMMARY

DESCRIPTION:


Under general supervision, provides sign language interpreter services to hearing impaired students. Work of the class involves interpreting classroom lectures, instructions and discussions using sign language. Interpreter I positions are assigned to schools (e.g., elementary) where standard interpretive skills and techniques can be used. Interpreter II positions are assigned to schools (e.g., secondary) where technical subject matter and more complex topics must be translated.

Program needs may require other assignments of both classes for a temporary period of time. Interpreter I duties and responsibilities are normally characterized by a high percentage of time involvement in tutoring activity and interpretation of less complex/technical information such as student directions and activities. Interpreter II duties and responsibilities normally require a high percentage of time in more complex/technical interpreting situations such as lectures and technical subject matter presentation.
CERTIFICATE LICENSE:
Possession of one of the following certificates is required for Interpreter of Hearing Impaired II:
Interpreter or Translator Certificate issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) with certification by RID in comprehensive skills desirable; bevel III (competent) Transliteration Certificate issued by the National Cued Speech Association (NCSA).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
This position requires knowledge of all of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS) to include commitment to students, knowledge of job, professionalism, interpersonal, communication, organization, and problem solving.

Considerable knowledge of the field of interpreting for the hearing impaired. Fluent interpreting skills and ability to see speech-reading difficulties and adjust message without change of content. Considerable ability to work with hearing impaired children and to work harmoniously with and provide a broad range of assistance to the instructional staff. Ability to effectively tutor students. Must exhibit effective human relations skills.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and

EXPERIENCE:


Interpreter for Hearing Impaired I -- Graduation from high school and some experience in working with hearing impaired persons. Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or National Cued Speech Association (NCSA) certification and interpreting experience highly desirable. College coursework desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

Interpreter for Hearing Impaired II -- Graduation from high school and considerable experience in working with hearing impaired students including total communication interpreting experience. Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or National Cued Speech Association (NCSA) certification as described below. Considerable college coursework desirable. MCPS assignment as a total communication or cued speech interpreter. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, skills, and certification necessary to perform effectively in the position, including total communication or cued speech interpreting experience may be considered.
