Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Supervisory Physician (Associate Director of the Cancer Imaging Program)

This position will serve as the AD within the Office of the Associate Director (OAD), CIP. The AD of CIP serves as the primary NCI official with overall responsibility for research, education, and coordination of activities related to oncology imaging for the extramural NCI community. This involves the planning, conduct, coordination, and evaluation of a broad array of national and international laboratory and clinical research programs designed to identify and develop new imaging approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and research activities in the field of oncologic molecular imaging (i.e., the development of imaging modalities targeted to specific biochemical or physiological processes in cancer cells).

The AD formulates the major overall scientific and operational policies of the program related to comprehensive and complex activities supported by grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and partnerships with universities, private industry, and other federal agencies. Oncology imaging encompasses a wide range of activities, including leading technological development initiatives in imaging, such as conventional and interventional radiology, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, magnetic resonance, and photoelectronic imaging.

The ideal candidate requires an M.D., or equivalent, with knowledge of, and experience in, grant and contract processes and policies, broad knowledge of cancer research, and administrative and managerial experience. This includes planning, analyzing, evaluating, coordinating, and integrating research support across program areas, across divisional boundaries within the NCI, across NIH Institutes and Centers, and with other Federal and non-Federal organizations that support cancer research.

Residency experience in radiology, nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, or related oncology imaging disciplines is preferred. The successful candidate will have demonstrated scientific leadership, experience developing collaborative partnerships, and the ability to assess research priorities and align program resources to advance the goals of the Cancer Imaging Program.

As supervisor for the CIP staff, more than 25% of time is devoted to personnel issues, including recruiting, performance evaluations, and budget management. The position is primarily devoted to scientific leadership and priority setting. Given a central role in federally sponsored research in oncology imaging, the incumbent establishes effective partnerships with academia, industry, and other Federal agencies to ensure that innovative imaging technologies are developed, enhanced, and successfully transferred and commercialized through grants, contracts, and other funding mechanisms.

In addition, the AD serves as a representative for the NCI at national and international scientific oncology meetings, including the World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS), the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), and other professional organizations.
