Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Bailiff is responsible for maintaining day‑to‑day order, protection, and security operations to ensure the safety of visitors, judges, employees, and the general public who visit the District Court. Additional duties include preparing courtrooms for sessions, maintaining courtroom order, and operating courthouse security checkpoint equipment to screen the public and visitors. Bailiffs exercise practical judgment to cope with routine and emergent situations, assist with evacuations and reentry during emergencies, and are considered essential personnel subject to call‑in during emergencies, closings, and staffing shortages.
In the event of a temporary or permanent location closure, Bailiffs remain at their post until relieved by proper authority.
- Education:
High school diploma or GED - Experience:
One (1) year of law‑enforcement experience as a police officer (excluding training academy) in a federal, state, or local agency, and successful completion of the required training program/probationary period.
OR One (1) year of experience as a military police officer or correctional officer (excluding training academy) with or without arrest powers, and successful completion of the required training program/probationary period.
Applicants must furnish a letter of good standing from their law‑enforcement, correctional, or government agency indicating status, separation date, and that they left in good standing. Licensure and certification requirements within six months of hire include:
- Special Police Commission and Maryland State Handgun permit
- Licensing for all less lethal devices (e.g., OC spray)
- AED/CPR certification
Bailiffs must pass an initial pre‑employment medical screening and a subsequent screening every three years. A reference check will be conducted by the District Court Security Office, and an at‑will contract will be issued upon hiring.
Physical DemandsWork requires standing and walking for eight hours daily, restraining or detaining individuals, frequent physical effort, independent judgment, and the ability to exercise tact under pressure. A physical examination is required.
