Operates various items of engineering and ordnance equipment in the construction and maintenance of ranges, moving and/or transporting heavy, bulky and oversized material and equipment.
Duties And Responsibilities- Transports and dispenses fuel as required
- Operates engineering equipment: scrapers, graders, tractor and trailer combinations (80,000 pound to 250,000+ pound), compactors, dump trucks, loaders, agricultural tractors, mowers, backhoes, hydraulic excavators, bulldozers, excavators, multi‑terrain loaders, and equipment with integrated tools (hydraulic hammers, saws, brush clearing blades, flails, metal shearers, rock crushers, snow plows, salt spreaders, and lifting devices)
- Utilizes powered pioneer tools such as chainsaws and string trimmers
- Reads, understands, and executes plans, blueprints, and specifications, including erosion, sediment controls, road or test course specifications, new construction, maintenance efforts, and novel designs
- Determines tactics, techniques, and procedures for developmental test operations using standard and non‑standard industrial construction equipment, complying with state or federal regulations regarding safety and environment
- Executes land clearing, tree and brush clearing, grading, and excavating to support ATC test programs; constructs berms and firing pads, parking pads, maintains roadways, clears snow and debris as required
- Uses equipment attachments such as winches, grading blades, and trail blazing blades
- Performs preventive maintenance on assigned equipment according to applicable military
-10/-20 standards or manufacturers’ maintenance manuals - Operates heavy equipment such as clamshells, power shovels, motor graders, heavy loaders, bulldozers, rollers, scrapers, and large industrial tractors with various attachments; excavates, loads, or moves dirt, gravel, or other materials
- Reads and interprets grade and slope stakes and simple plans
- Greases, adjusts, and makes emergency repairs to equipment
- Serves as escort and guard for vehicles transported across the US and Canada
- Operates motor vehicles with responsibility for proper loading, unloading, and preventive maintenance
- Operates truck tractors and semi‑trailers to transport heavy, bulky, and oversized materials such as armor plate, track‑laying vehicles, and aircraft fuselages; transports to on‑post and off‑post locations throughout the United States and Canada
- Operates heavy‑duty trucks (4 tons and over) to transport materials and equipment within the installation
- Delivers test items across the United States and Canada; may be TDY for extended times
- Operates 10‑ton tractor with 20‑ton tank trailer to carry up to 5,000 gallons of gasoline and/or diesel fuel for scheduled daily and weekly deliveries
- Dispenses proper amount of fuel from truck to storage tanks in accordance with correct operating procedures
- Operates aerial platforms to lift, move, and emplace guns, armor plate, and perform forestry operations; uses when ladders are not practical
- Assembles rigging to lift and move equipment or material; selects cables, ropes, pulleys, winches, blocks, and sheaves according to weight and load size; attaches load with grappling devices to crane hook
- As a rigger, gives directions to crane operators or hoisting engineers engaged in hoisting and moving loads, ensuring safety of workers and material handled, using hand signals, loudspeaker, radio, or telephone
- Sets up, braces, shackles, and rigs hoisting equipment using hand tools and power wrenches
- Operates forklifts up to and in excess of 50,000 pounds
- Performs operator level preventive maintenance, checks, and services (PMCS, US Army equivalent to
-10) - Performs other duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
- Must have 5 years’ experience as a heavy equipment operator
