This is senior technical level operations service work, which may include lead worker responsibility. Work includes skilled trades work at the master mechanic level involving heating, ventilation and air conditioning installation, maintenance, and repairs.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONThis is skilled manual and technical work at the experienced level; directing and performing heating and air conditioning installations and repairs for County-owned facilities. Work includes supervising and participating in the installation, service, and maintenance of air conditioning and heating equipment; performing preventive maintenance work. Work is performed with general supervision from a technical or administrative superior. Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out in accordance with accepted trades standards and applicable regulations.
Work is reviewed periodically on a project basis. Work includes responsibility for maintenance and efficient operation of expensive heating and air conditioning equipment. Include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Works and cooperates with co-workers and supervisors at all levels. Learns and performs all essential job functions accurately.
Troubleshoots air conditioning, heating, electrical and pneumatic controls; disassembles, replaces, or adjusts defective parts; tests completed work; properly recharges air conditioning systems with refrigerants and tracks usage for EPA regulations; orders parts; performs preventive maintenance; makes emergency repairs to equipment; assures efficient, economical and safe practices and procedures for the operation of air conditioning and heating equipment.
Tests joints, systems, compressors, and other related equipment. Cleans and maintains boilers/chillers.
Is responsible for maintenance of all air conditioning and heating equipment and records.
Performs a variety of building maintenance tasks; assists electrician to troubleshoot faults; assists plumber in repair of pumps and motors.
Provides "in-house" preventive maintenance on equipment.
Directs the work of others; may be assigned apprentice for a specified time.
Performs overtime work and on call work.
This position is designated as an emergency/essential position and may be required to respond in a variety of emergency situations.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESThis job has no direct supervisor responsibilities. May direct or oversee the work of lower level semiskilled and unskilled employees.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED and five (5) years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating and air conditioning equipment. EPA Refrigerant Certification.
Knowledge of standard trade practices, methods, tools, instruments, and equipment.
Knowledge of all phases of shop mathematics relevant to the performance of heating and air conditioning work.
Ability to climb and work from scaffolds, ladders and catwalks.
Ability to read blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams and other specifications.
Basic computer skills navigating through a series of menus.
Ability to plan, assign, and review the work of others.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
