Interview And Hire State Highway Administration – Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice

District 1 – Worcester County

Recruitment:
The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) District 1 – Worcester County is currently recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice (HEMT) position. This is an interview and hire position that is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below.

This announcement may also be used for future SHA vacancies throughout the state of Maryland.

Nature of Work

This is an entry level of repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles, diesel‑powered equipment and/or construction/maintenance equipment. This position requires knowledge of basic principles of operation and construction of diesel and gas‑powered engines; knowledge of proper use, care, and maintenance of various standard hand tools; knowledge of repair and service concepts, principles, testing devices, tools, meters, etc. involved in the repair and servicing of heavy road maintenance equipment.

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports, carry out instructions, communicate and work effectively with others. Employees receive close supervision from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor or other designated supervisor. Employees in this class are considered essential employees and are subject to call 24 hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of the facility.

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off‑hours in order to maintain and repair equipment. Employees are required to work outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extreme heat, fumes, exhaust and hazardous materials.

On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds.

State Highway Administration (SHA) has been named Training Magazine’s Training APEX for the seventh consecutive year.

Education and Experience

Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

None.

  • Applicants may substitute documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as described under the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
  • Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) may be substituted for two years of the required education. The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education Minimum Qualifications.
  • Certification as a Master Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.

Candidates must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.

Selected candidate will need to obtain a Class B CDL license within six months of appointment.

Employees in this class may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver’s License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated.

Employees will be required to successfully complete agency certification programs to be eligible for permanent status in this classification.
