We are seeking a highly skilled and dynamic Full Stack Developer with expertise in Python and JavaScript/Type Script, particularly with the React framework. This role will contribute to both backend services and frontend user interfaces for web and mobile applications used by researchers and clinicians at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

This is a full‑time position with Guidehouse and may be performed remotely or on‑site at NIH in Rockville, MD. The Software Developer will work closely with PhD‑level scientists and subject matter experts to translate complex scientific workflows into reliable, scalable software solutions. Development is highly collaborative and iterative, driven by ongoing feedback from researchers, clinical staff, subject matter experts, and fellow developers.

Strong communication skills are essential, as the Developer will regularly interact with non‑technical business roles to understand requirements and explain technical solutions clearly.

What You Will Do
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain web applications using Python and React (JavaScript/Type Script).
  • Build and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Develop responsive, accessible, and performant user interfaces using React and modern frontend tooling.
  • Participate with cross‑functional software development team and subject matter experts working in an Agile environment.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well‑documented code following best practices.
  • Develop new applications as well as extend existing applications; develop new features and customizations that harmonize with existing codebases.
  • Optimize application performance and scalability of existing analysis pipelines to meet the demands of rapidly growing datasets.
  • Maintain CI/CD workflows and support deployment processes.
  • Experiment with new technologies and systems as well as prototype solutions for potential integration into existing infrastructure.
  • Review and address security vulnerabilities in collaboration with our security and infrastructure teams.
What You Will Need

Education:

B.S. in computer science or related field.

Technical Skills
  • Backend:
    Python, REST APIs, AWS
  • Frontend:
    React, JavaScript/Type Script, HTML5, CSS
  • Tools:
    Git, CI/CD pipelines
  • Testing:
    Unit and integration testing
Core Competencies

Experience
  • 4 years of full stack web application development and maintenance experience, including development in Python and building applications with React
  • Experience developing and consuming REST APIs
  • 3 years of experience working with databases
  • Experience building containerized applications using Docker
  • 2 years of experience using Git Hub Actions for CI/CD
  • Experience deploying and operating software on AWS (e.g., ECS/EKS, S3, RDS)
  • Experience communicating with end users on software development projects; being comfortable explaining complex computational terms using simple language for a non‑computational audience
  • Demonstrated experience extending the functionality of existing software; ability to learn an existing body of code and extend it
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD Public Trust; candidates with an active public trust or suitability are preferred
What Would Be Nice To Have
  • Familiarity with SCRUM/Agile development
  • Familiarity with Swagger/OpenAPI
  • Experience visualizing complex or large‑scale data sets
  • Experience reviewing and responding to security vulnerability reports

The annual salary range for this position is $98,000.00–$. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
