SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Road & Bridge Administrator, the Equipment Operator C performs skilled work in the operation of heavy construction equipment in the maintenance, repair, and construction of county roads, bridges, drainage systems, and rights-of-way. This position is responsible for laying and patching asphalt, grading, maintaining street signs, hauling materials, and assisting in all phases of road and bridge maintenance.

Work requires a high level of skill and safety awareness gained through extensive experience in heavy equipment operation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including motor graders, compactors, backhoes, bulldozers, front-end loaders, dump trucks, rollers, sweepers, trailers, and asphalt distributors.
  • Performs grading, shaping, and smoothing of unpaved areas to ensure proper contour and drainage.
  • Assists in laying, spreading, and compacting asphalt for road construction and maintenance projects.
  • Hauls materials such as base, gravel, asphalt and debris to and from work sites using dump trucks and other hauling equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains street and traffic control signs in accordance with county and state regulations.
  • Clears and maintains rights-of-way by mowing, trimming, removing debris, and performing drainage ditch maintenance.
  • Performs routine inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of assigned equipment; reports mechanical issues or safety concerns promptly.
  • Loads and unloads materials and equipment safely; ensures proper securing and handling of loads.
  • Uses backhoe and loaders for material transportation to job sites, culvert replacement, ditch maintenance, and oversized tree removal.
  • Sets up and maintains traffic control in work zones to ensure public and employee safety.
  • Responds to emergency situations such as storm damage, flooding, or roadway obstructions.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Road and Bridge Superintendent.
SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory or budget responsibility.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Possess Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • Extensive knowledge of road and bridge construction, repair, and maintenance practices.
  • Skilled in the safe and efficient operation of a wide range of heavy construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of asphalt and base material application and compaction techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, maps, and simple construction plans.
  • Knowledge of traffic control and work zone safety procedures.
  • Ability to detect and report equipment malfunctions and perform basic preventive maintenance.
  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to county, state, and federal safety standards.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a variety of weather and road conditions.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Minimum 10 years of verifiable experience operating heavy equipment in road construction or maintenance.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check.
  • Ability to work extended hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call assignments during emergencies. maintenance.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Position works both in a shop and outside. Position has daily exposure to varying temperature ranges and seasonal fluctuations in weather conditions; and occasional exposure to noise and vibration and physical hazards. Health and safety hazards are minimal. Safety glasses, steel toe boots, gloves and ear plugs are recommended. Use of lifting, carrying, reaching, standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, climbing, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting and talking are frequently required.

All employees are responsible for maintaining cleanliness of the work area, office and bathroom.
