Safety Manager / Health & Safety Officer
This role serves as the primary on-site Health & Safety Officer for environmental remediation and construction projects, overseeing all health, safety, inspection, and compliance activities. The Safety Manager leads the development and implementation of site-specific safety programs, ensures alignment with regulatory and client requirements, and fosters a strong culture of safety excellence. The position requires an independent safety professional who actively conducts inspections, identifies hazards, implements corrective actions, and provides hands-on safety leadership to project teams in high-risk environments.
Responsibilities- Serve as the primary on-site Health & Safety Officer for the full duration of assigned projects.
- Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific health and safety programs tailored to environmental remediation and construction activities.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with federal, state, local, and client safety requirements throughout all project phases.
- Promote safe work practices and proactive hazard recognition among all project personnel and subcontractors.
- Establish and manage a comprehensive site inspection and audit program to evaluate safety performance.
- Conduct and document weekly site inspections in coordination with site supervision and client representatives.
- Perform monthly site inspections to assess overall project safety performance and identify trends.
- Carry out routine informal daily inspections of active work areas to identify hazards and unsafe conditions.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and up-to-date inspection and audit records on-site.
- Investigate and document safety incidents, near misses, and hazard observations, ensuring thorough root cause analysis.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports and provide regular safety performance summaries to project leadership and client representatives.
- Track corrective actions resulting from inspections and incident investigations and verify their timely completion.
- Assist management teams in addressing safety concerns and implementing continuous improvements in safety processes.
- Train and coach project personnel on proper inspection techniques, safe work practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and site safety orientations for new and existing project personnel.
- Provide guidance and support to supervisors regarding hazard mitigation, risk reduction, and regulatory compliance.
- Reinforce housekeeping standards and safe operational procedures to maintain orderly and safe work areas.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all safety-related matters on-site, including coordination with client safety representatives.
- Collaborate closely with project management, field supervision, and client representatives to ensure project safety objectives are achieved.
- Support project planning activities by evaluating risks, participating in job hazard analyses, and recommending preventive measures.
- Minimum of 5 years of on-site health and safety oversight experience in environmental remediation, heavy civil, construction, industrial, or related projects.
- Proven experience serving as the lead safety professional on active construction sites.
- Demonstrated experience conducting safety inspections, audits, incident investigations, and corrective action management.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- Hazwoper 40 certification.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and environmental compliance requirements applicable to construction and remediation projects.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in high-risk environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear reports and deliver effective safety briefings.
- Proficiency using safety-related tools and platforms such as Procore or similar construction management software.
- Experience in construction safety with at least 5 years focused on field-based safety leadership.
