Position

Buildings and Grounds Patrol Officer – Safety and Security Department, State of Connecticut, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). Full-time, second shift Wednesday through Sunday, 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm. Address: 287 West Street, Rocky Hill, CT.

About DVA

For over 160 years, DVA has been caring for its veterans and their dependents. As a Department, we believe in "serving those who have served." The DVA provides services through its Office of Advocacy and Assistance, Residential Facility, Healthcare Center, and Cemetery and Burial Services.

Responsibilities
  • Enforce regulations, rules, and regulations related to parking and traffic control as established by the agency.
  • Direct traffic on state property and issue tickets for violations.
  • Guard entrances and exits to prevent trespassing, vandalism, theft, and other violations.
  • Perform routine vehicle and foot patrol duty of DVA campus buildings, cemeteries, and other state locations.
  • Monitor security, fire alarm, and other systems, and use access control systems and cameras to deter crime while maintaining safety and security.
  • Assist patients, residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Provide first aid when necessary and perform dispatching and record‑keeping functions at a desk post.
  • Assist in maintaining order among patients and searching for missing patients when required.
  • May oversee the activities of fellow officers and assist in fire prevention and fire fighting activities as designated.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Any experience or training which would provide the skills and abilities indicated above.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in the field of security or public safety.
  • Experience conducting vehicle/foot patrols to prevent trespassing.
  • Experience writing incident reports.
  • Experience being dispatched to calls for service and using radio communication systems.
  • Experience working with people with substance abuse, mental health, or anger issues.
Special Requirements
  • Must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Standard First Aid Certificate and/or CPR certification.
Physical Requirements

Incumbents must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury that would impair health or usefulness, and possess sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all duties of the class. Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.
