Position: ACCOUNTANT- I (GRANTS)

JOB SUMMARY

This position performs specialized accounting work in support of grant management operations and the accounting division. Responsible for managing and monitoring federal, state, and local grants; ensuring grant compliance; preparing grant reports; and providing technical accounting support, financial analysis, and reporting guidance.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Creates, updates, analyzes, and processes accounting transactions; analyzes financial transactions; provides accounting guidance; communicates financial information; records adjusting and corrective journal entries; assists departments with financial questions and training.
  • Analyzes ledger accounts, prepares reconciliations for assigned balance sheet accounts, and balances assigned general ledger accounts.
  • Assists with preparation of the annual independent audit, audit work papers, and assigned ACFR schedules.
  • Prepares and gathers information to complete internal and external reports.
  • Manages and monitors federal, state, and local grants; prepares complex grant reports; provides guidance to City divisions regarding grant requirements and regulations.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests from internal and external customers.
  • Trains City employees on accounting processes, grant requirements, and financial software applications.
  • Assists the Accounting Manager with reporting analysis, special projects, and key financial ratio analysis.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • One (1) year’s experience in a related field of work.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to be bonded.
  • Knowledge of financial accounting and specialized accounting requirements for government entities.
  • Knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards Board guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the Governmental Accounting, Auditing, and Financial Reporting model.
  • Knowledge of internal financial controls.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of computerized financial software.
  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel at an advanced level.
  • Skill in analyzing complex financial problems and identifying solutions.
  • Skill in preparing clear and accurate reports.
  • Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.
  • Skill in setting priorities for competing projects with established deadlines.
  • Skill in performing complex mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in operating computers and other standard office equipment.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
