Job DescriptionTHIS IS A SHARED POSITION - SCHOOLS WILL BE ASSIGNED
POSITION: ESL Teacher (English as a Second Language)
SALARY GRADE: State Salary Schedule plus local supplement
NATURE OF WORK: An employee in this class provides direct instruction to students. In some cases, ESL teachers may work one‑on‑one with special needs students, in which cases such assistants may be required to possess additional skills and training in providing for the specific physical needs of such students. A wide variety of tasks are performed in the teaching‑learning process for students, the primary one being to help students develop English language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing that will contribute to their success with instructional programming.
A teacher performs his/her duties under the supervision of, and reports to, the principal.
- Teaches District approved curriculum
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
- Plans a program of study, employing a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules
- Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students
- Assists in diagnosing the learning disabilities of students, with the assistance of district specialists
- Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
- Is available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day

Communication Skills- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals consistent with the duties of this position
- Ability to compose and write routine reports consistent with the duties of this position
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff and the general public consistent with the duties of this position
Language: Must read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical: Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning: Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
