Job Description
Position: Teacher
Reports To: Principal
Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
Starting Date: Immediately
Location: Edgecombe County Public Schools, J.W. Parker Middle, Rocky Mount, NC
OverviewTo plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesManagement of Instructional Time
The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time-on-task.
Management of Student Behavior
Establishes rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, student verbal participation and talk during different activity types, student movement, and transition management; consistently monitors behavior and maintains student dignity.
Instructional Presentation
Reviews previous materials; introduces lessons and learning objectives; communicates clearly; provides relevant examples; assigns tasks with a high rate of student success; asks appropriate questions; maintains a brisk pace; ensures clear assignments; summarizes main points at lesson end.
Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
Maintains clear work standards and due dates; circulates to check performance; uses varied work products to monitor progress; poses questions clearly and one at a time.
Instructional Feedback
Provides feedback on in-class and out-of-class work; affirms correct responses; offers sustained feedback after incorrect or no response by probing or providing time.
Facilitating Instruction
Uses an instructional plan aligned with curricular goals; uses diagnostic information to develop objectives; maintains records; aligns objectives, strategies, assessment with student needs; utilizes available resources.
Interacting Within the Educational Environment
Treats all students fairly; interacts effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and the community.
Performing Non-Instructional Duties
Performs non-instructional duties as assigned; adheres to laws and policies; pursues professional development and demonstrates growth.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Training and Experience
Degree in education or in a related area that will qualify for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards
Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools; ability to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; physical requirements consistent with Light Work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to monitor safety and well-being of students; motivate students; maintain a clean and orderly environment; perform clerical duties; maintain order and discipline; operate common office machines; maintain basic files and records; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
