Senior Controls Engineer
Design, program, troubleshoot, implement, and test electrical control systems for automated packaging machinery. Lead the full project lifecycle—from functional specification analysis to final on‑site commissioning—ensuring all systems meet company standards, safety regulations, and customer requirements. This role reports to the Controls Engineering Manager and is located in the Rocky Mount, NC office.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and debug PLC and HMI programs (primarily Rockwell, Siemens, and Omron).
- Design electrical schematics and panel layouts using AutoCAD Electrical.
- Implement precise motor control with VFDs and servo systems.
- Configure fieldbus communications (Ether Net/IP, Profinet, etc.) and data acquisition systems.
- Create and enforce standard procedures for technical documentation, functional specifications, and training materials.
- Create and maintain accurate Bills of Material, coordinating with ERP systems for procurement.
- Assist in developing checklists for system testing and debugging.
- Evaluate Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) for technical impact, cost, and safety.
- Identify and replace obsolete electrical components to sustain machine longevity.
- Coordinate with production for assembly, hardware integration, and provide in‑house or on‑site technical training.
- Travel up to 15% to customer locations for installation, service, and commissioning.
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Technical School degree, or equivalent proven work experience.
- Minimum 7 years of automation controls and programming experience.
- Experience with packaging machinery preferred.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or Solid Works Electrical.
- Knowledge of I/O hardware, signal conditioning, field devices, sensors, and machine safety standards.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to lead and collaborate with cross‑functional teams (Sales, Marketing, Engineering, Production, Field Services).
- ERP system experience for BOM creation is a plus.
