Position: Registered Nurse (RN)
Position: Registered Nurse (RN) Location: Edgecombe Youth Development Center, Rocky Mount, North Carolina
Schedule: Monday Friday, 7:00 AM 3:30 PM Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive healthcare services to juveniles in a secure residential setting. This role requires a high level of autonomy, as the RN may serve as the sole on-site medical provider during portions of the shift. The nurse will collaborate with direct care staff to ensure safe, effective, and timely medical care in accordance with established protocols.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver direct nursing care to adolescent residents
  • Conduct health assessments and respond to medical needs
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation
  • Collaborate with facility staff to support overall resident care
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide appropriate interventions
  • Follow all facility policies, procedures, and clinical protocols
  • Participate in required meetings, trainings, and orientation sessions
  • Utilize basic computer systems and communication tools (e.g., Microsoft Teams or Web Ex)
Work Environment
  • Secure juvenile justice facility
  • Requires movement through multiple locked areas
  • RN may work independently without on-site clinical supervision at times
  • Strong institutional support and established protocols are available
Required Qualifications
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (in North Carolina or compact state)
  • Ability to work independently and make sound clinical decisions
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Familiarity with virtual communication platforms (Microsoft Teams or Web Ex)

  • Adolescent or pediatric nursing
  • School nursing
  • Public health
  • Correctional or juvenile facility experience
  • Emergency or acute care nursing

Pre-Employment / Onboarding Requirements

Candidates must complete the following prior to facility access:

  • Policies and Procedures Checklist (Form JJ 020)
  • PREA Information (Form OPA-T10)
  • IT Resources Statement of Understanding (Form JJ 5 001)
  • IT Confidentiality Agreement (Form JJ 19 001)
  • Medical and Mental Health Care PREA Training (OPA-T330 Nurses only)
Orientation Process
  • Orientation may be conducted virtually or in person
  • Includes on-site training and facility tour
  • Scheduling varies based on role
Additional Requirements
  • Personal cell phones are not permitted inside the facility
  • Personal belongings must be stored in clear bags or containers
  • Glass items are prohibited
  • Confirmation letters (including time-off requests) must be submitted at least 24 hours prior to orientation
