Position SummaryUNC Health Nash Cancer Center is seeking an experienced Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our multidisciplinary Hematology & Oncology team. This position offers the opportunity to practice in a collaborative, patient‑centered environment, working closely with medical oncologists, hematologists, nurse navigators, infusion services, and other oncology support staff. The APP will function as a key member of the oncology care team, providing comprehensive outpatient care for hematology and oncology patients within a team‑based care model.
The ideal candidate will bring prior clinical experience as an APP and an interest in building long‑term relationships with oncology and hematology patients within a supportive community cancer center.
- Evaluate and manage outpatient hematology and oncology patients in a clinic setting.
- Conduct follow‑up visits and ongoing disease management for patients receiving cancer treatment.
- Perform pre‑infusion evaluations to assess patient readiness for chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other oncology treatments.
- Manage patients with benign hematology conditions, including simple anemia and iron deficiency anemia.
- Review laboratory results, imaging, treatment plans, and clinical status to support continuity of care.
- Collaborate closely with physicians, nurse navigators, infusion staff, and other members of the oncology team.
- Respond to patient messages, electronic communications, and care coordination needs through Epic In Basket and other communication tools.
- Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, symptom management, and supportive care.
- Participate in limited inpatient consultation support, including patient assessments, documentation, and collaboration with the attending hematologist/oncologist.
- Maintain timely and accurate medical documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Contribute to quality improvement, evidence‑based practice, and professional development initiatives.
- Established Hematology & Oncology practice within UNC Health Nash Cancer Center.
- Primarily outpatient role with minimal inpatient responsibilities.
- Average patient volume of approximately 14 patients per day.
- Dedicated administrative day each week.
- Collaborative team environment with hematologists, oncologists, APPs, nurse navigators, and infusion services.
- Growing team‑based care model pairing APPs with physician partners.
- Opportunity to participate in oncology‑related research or quality initiatives, including nurse‑driven studies, when applicable.
- No routine procedures required.
- No after‑hours or weekend call currently required.
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
- Current North Carolina NP or PA license or eligibility for licensure.
- Prior experience as an APP in Hematology/Oncology.
- Experience caring for complex adult patients in primary care, hospital medicine, internal medicine, oncology, or a related specialty.
- Oncology nursing experience strongly valued, particularly for APP candidates transitioning into oncology practice.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating within a multidisciplinary care team.
