Preschool Aide / Paraprofessional Job Description

The Preschool Aide / Paraprofessional will work closely with the assigned preschool teacher to support a safe, nurturing, play-based learning environment for young children. This position assists with daily classroom routines, student supervision, instructional activities, transitions, meals, rest time, toileting support, and other duties that help the preschool classroom run smoothly. This position will also assist with building-wide duties as needed.

The successful Preschool Aide is caring, patient, dependable, and committed to supporting the physical, emotional, social, and academic growth of each child. This person should enjoy working with young children and understand the importance of building positive relationships with students, families, and staff.

Objectives of this Role

  • Provide instructional and developmental support under the direction of the preschool director.
  • Support students as they build independence, social skills, communication skills, and school readiness.
  • Serve as a positive, nurturing, and consistent guide for preschool students.
  • Model professional and ethical standards when working with students, families, staff, and the community.
  • Follow and uphold all school rules, procedures, safety expectations, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Safely supervise students in the classroom, during transitions, on the playground, at meals, during rest time, and during other school activities.
  • Assist the teacher with preparing materials, implementing classroom routines, and supporting individual student needs.
  • Complete tasks as directed from the building principal.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

  • Assist students with physical, personal, academic, social, and emotional needs throughout the school day.
  • Support classroom routines including arrival, check-in, learning centers, circle time, small groups, meals, toileting, handwashing, rest time, dismissal, and transitions.
  • Work with students individually and in small groups during lessons, play-based activities, and classroom centers.
  • Provide support during meals and snacks, including helping students open items, practice appropriate table manners, and clean up.
  • Assist with toileting, bathroom routines, clothing changes, and personal care needs as appropriate.
  • Supervise students during recess, outdoor play, transitions, and other activities outside the classroom.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, safe, and welcoming classroom environment.
  • Prepare instructional materials, organize supplies, clean learning areas, and assist with classroom displays or projects.
  • Support positive behavior by using calm redirection, encouragement, and developmentally appropriate strategies.
  • Communicate student needs, concerns, and progress to the classroom teacher.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and school matters.
  • Assist with documentation, attendance, communication folders, and other clerical tasks as directed by the teacher.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, family events, and school activities as needed.
  • Complete duties around the building as assigned. May include: lunch duty, arrival & dismissal duty, and/or coverage for duties that are not covered due to absences.

Skills and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working with young children is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults.
  • Patience, flexibility, reliability, and a positive attitude.
  • Understanding of basic early childhood development or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to support children with toileting, hygiene, meals, rest time, and transitions.
  • Ability to follow directions, work as part of a team, and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Willingness to learn and use classroom routines, behavior supports, and educational tools.
  • Ability to safely supervise young children in active indoor and outdoor settings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in early childhood education, child development, education, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in a preschool, childcare, Head Start, or early elementary classroom.
  • Experience supporting students with developmental delays, disabilities, or diverse learning needs.
  • Passing score on Parapro Praxis test
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification suggested.
