Position: Estimator I - Earthwork

Job Summary

The Estimator I supports the development of accurate, competitive bids for earthwork and site development projects, including mass grading, excavation, haul operations, site preparation, and related civil construction work. This entry‑level estimating role is designed for individuals early in their construction career who are ready to take ownership of portions of an estimate and contribute directly to bid success.

Responsibilities
  • Gather and calculate quantities (square yard, linear feet, cubic yard, each, etc.) for each project to determine materials needed and material movement, and compile data for use in bid proposals.
  • Solicit quotes from subcontractors for bid preparation and final numbers, keeping DBE/MBE requirements in mind with subcontractor invitations to bid.
  • Collect quotes on materials required for the project.
  • Construct the bid by adding activities, crews, and equipment, adjusting production rates.
  • Print bid proposals and deliver them to owners or general contractors within the required time frame.
  • Determine results of bids by contacting general contractors or receiving communication from the bid runner for publicly awarded jobs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Construction Management or Civil Engineering from a four‑year college or university; or minimum of 0–2 years’ experience bidding and estimating projects or 5 years of related field experience; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with construction bidding and project management software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to work with all levels of management, employees, external vendors, and other business associates, and to clearly communicate directions and information.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, clients, and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and document data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret a variety of situations and respond accordingly; seek counsel when needed and use a variety of resources.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all Veit policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of AGTEK and HCSS software.
Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record.
  • Occasional travel and overnight stays to jobsites and client meetings (approximately 10%).
Physical Demands

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by any employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to stand and/or sit in a stationary position for extended periods of time; 50%+. The employee is regularly required to use a computer/laptop/iPad in the office environment, navigate between office building floors, and occasionally attend off‑site meetings.

The employee may encounter high noise levels, but hearing protection is provided/required.

Work Environment

The work environment is primarily an office setting, with required travel to jobsites. Employees frequently work alone and with others. The environment may include variable work conditions, including moving machinery, odors, dust, pressurized equipment, electrical hazards, and environmental conditions such as rain, snow, wind, and temperature extremes.

Compensation & Benefits

Base Compensation: $70,000 – $81,000
