Job Description
The Estimator’s primary duty is to gather, calculate, and compile data for use in bid proposal estimates, collect and maintain current, accurate information on prices from suppliers and contractors, and create the bid in Heavy Bid under general supervision to execute the final bid proposal for the owner in a timely manner.
A Day in the Life- Gather, calculate quantities (square yard, linear feet, cubic yard, each, etc.) for each project to factor materials needed and material movement, and compile data for use in bid proposal estimates.
- Solicit quotes from subcontractors for bid preparation and final numbers, keeping DBE/MBE requirements in mind with subcontractor invitations to bid.
- Collect quotes on materials required for the project.
- Construct the bid by adding activities (work to be completed), crews, and equipment, adjusting production rates.
- Print out bid proposals, create the proposal, and send or deliver to owner or general contractor within the required timeframe.
- Determine results of bids by contacting general contractors or communicating with the bid runner for publicly awarded jobs.
- Other duties or tasks as assigned by Management.
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Construction Management or Civil Engineering, or a minimum of 0–2 years’ experience bidding and estimating projects, or 5 years of related field experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Construction Bidding and Project Management software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to work with all levels of management, employees, external vendors, and other business associates; clearly communicate directions and information.
- Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, clients, and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to define problems, collect and document data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, interpret a variety of situations and events, and respond accordingly; seek counsel when needed and use a variety of resources.
- Ability to maintain compliance with all Veit policies and procedures.
- Working knowledge of AGTEK and HCSS software.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record.
- Occasional travel and overnight stays to jobsites and client meetings (approximately 10%).

The employee is regularly required to use a computer/laptop/iPad in an office environment with natural or fluorescent lighting, navigate between office building floors, and occasionally attend off‑site meetings. The employee occasionally may encounter high noise levels, but hearing protection is provided/required.
The work environment is primarily an office setting, but jobsite travel is required. Employees frequently work alone and with others. The work environment may include variable conditions outside a typical office environment, such as moving machinery, odors, dust, pressurized equipment, electrical hazards, loud noises, and variable weather (rain, snow, wind, cold, heat).

Base Compensation: $70,000 – $81,000. The salary range may vary depending on geographic location, applicant skills, and prior relevant experience.
