Job Title: Welder - Class A

Department: Fabrication

Reports To: Welding Lead

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Shift Schedule: 1st

Shift: Monday through Thursday 5:30am - 3:00pm and Friday 5:30am - 9:30am

2nd

Shift: Monday through Wednesday 3:00pm - 2:30am and Thursday 3:00pm - 10:00 pm

Summary:
Welding of metal components and assemblies using various techniques. Operate welding machines in a productive and safe manner to product parts that meet DSI quality requirements at the lowest cost in a timely manner while minimizing waste of materials and resources. As a level A welder, a higher level of responsibility is given to ensure products are completed in a timely and accurate fashion as well as an involvement with your team in a positive and productive manner.

Responsibilities and duties include:

• Must read and understand layouts, job packets and blueprints for parts being fabricated, even if it is a repeat job. This includes understanding of dimensions and tolerances of finished parts.

• Analyze plans, blueprints or drawings to determine work requirements, sequence of welding assignments and direct others on the operation

• Use Mig and Tig welding methods on various types of metals following DSI's written quality procedures

• Able to weld complex parts, follow procedures and create/use complex fixturing in the assembly process

• Mentor other welders within the department

Ø Be the go-to person in the welding department to assist training and development of other welders, fabrication supervisor and project managers to help find the best practices, achieve higher standards, perform customer requirements to specifications on prints and identify best practices

Ø May be asked to help instruct class B welders on various welding techniques

• Continuously look for and seek out any continuous improvements that may be made in the department

• Provide accurate inventory counts at all times and keep parts in appropriate parts storage areas

• Recognize problem processes and/or unsafe set-ups and recommend alternatives

• Perform basic maintenance of machines as required and keep supervisors informed of necessary maintenance beyond minimal operator ability

• Other duties as assigned

Education or Certifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent

• Two year degree in welding trade school and five years in welding position. May be a combination of schooling and education.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies:

• Understanding of safety rules and regulations to prevent unsafe set-ups, operations, or acts which might cause injury to self, others, environment or equipment.

• Strong knowledge of welding processes to ensure daily goals and production is met and to look for ways to optimize processes

• Strong knowledge of inspection procedures

• Proactively engage in a working relationship with other members of the team

• Able to lift 25 pounds or more daily and over 25 pounds occasionally

• Ability to push or pull over 25 pounds daily or over 25 pounds occasionally

Communication skills both verbally and written

• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
