Job Description
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. The appointment is anticipated to begin Fall 2026.
MSE Department Overview
The MSE department currently comprises sixteen tenured/tenure-track faculty and five non-tenure-track teaching/research faculty. The department offers undergraduate degrees in ceramic, metallurgical, and semiconductor engineering, as well as graduate degrees in materials science and engineering, ceramic engineering, and metallurgical engineering. The department serves approximately 150 undergraduate students and 75 graduate students.
Faculty in the department conduct research across a broad range of areas, including advanced high-strength steels, critical minerals and materials, materials for extreme environments, biomaterials, functional and energy materials, with approximately $12 million in annual research expenditures.
Position Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
* Contribute to undergraduate and graduate education
* Develop and sustain a nationally recognized, externally funded research program
* Participate in service activities within the university and professional community
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
* Ph.D. in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related field
* Demonstrated expertise in ultra-high temperature materials and materials for extreme environments
* U.S. citizenship or permanent resident
Preferred Qualifications
* Ability to collaborate effectively in diverse, multidisciplinary teams
* Strong communication skills
* Experience working with national laboratories and/or industry, particularly in aerospace and nuclear sectors
* Record of collaborative, competitively funded research
* Experience participating in multi-investigator research teams and running large research programs
