Medical Assistant - Gerontology Day Shift

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Follow hospital patient safety policies, including infection prevention, safe patient handling, and notifying licensed nurses about patient condition changes.
• Provide direct patient interaction in the clinic: escort patients to rooms, obtain vital signs, EKGs, verify medications, allergies, medical/surgical/family history, and chief complaint/visit reason as directed by the provider; document accurate information promptly.
• Route phone messages, patient questions, and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
• Act as a liaison between physicians/APPs and patients; call patients about normal or abnormal test results, answer questions, and assist physicians with return calls.
• Assist with renewal and authorization of medications and administer medications (oral, IM, SQ) as ordered.
• Perform point‑of‑care lab testing and obtain blood samples and other specimens for lab testing as ordered.
• Complete required paperwork, prior authorization, referrals, and documentation in a timely manner.
• Monitor supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies; clean and stock exam areas.
• Introduce patients and/or guardians to the MyChart system, explain how to sign up, and provide education on its benefits.
• Orient and train new medical assistants.
• Meet commitments, work independently, accept accountability, handle change, set personal standards, stay focused under pressure, and maintain attendance and punctuality.

• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant or Medical Specialist program (or equivalent work experience) required.
• High school diploma required.
• One year of Medical Assistant or other medical specialist experience preferred (medical clinic experience preferred).

• Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from an approved accrediting organization (e.g., AMT) preferred.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required.

• Concentration required; capacity to lift up to 35 lbs.; perform turning activities; maintain continuous walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
• Frequent exposure to infectious disease, communicable disease via blood and other body fluids; occasional exposure to hostile persons.
• Minimal physical discomfort expected.
