Overview
Patient Services Representative – a front‑line role that enables patients to receive timely, accurate, and compassionate care. The position involves patient registration, appointment scheduling, insurance verification, and providing essential patient support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Create a welcoming and efficient environment for patients, addressing their needs and providing support through the initial stages of their healthcare journey.
- Collect accurate demographic information (name, address, phone number, date of birth, insurance details) and enter it into the system.
- Update existing patient records with any changes and obtain applicable consents and required forms.
- Verify patients’ insurance coverage using EHR Real Time Eligibility, online verification systems, or by contacting insurance providers.
- Ensure necessary pre‑authorizations or referrals for services are obtained.
- Explain insurance benefits and financial responsibilities to patients.
- Provide exceptional customer service by answering phones promptly and professionally, addressing concerns, and providing information.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality.
- Collect co‑pays, deductibles, co‑insurance, and balance payments in compliance with hospital policy.
- Maintain work queues to ensure efficient claims processing and organizational financial health.
- Assist patients with navigating and using the online patient portal.
- Adapt to shifting work assignments and area priorities based on business needs.
High School Diploma or GED required.
Work Experience- At least six months of office and/or call center, customer service, or healthcare experience preferred.
- Knowledge of computers and standard office equipment required.
- Proficiency in data entry preferred.
- Graduate of an accredited medical receptionist or similar program, or two years in a health care setting is preferred.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to concentrate, pay close attention to detail, and perform duties under time restrictions.
- Maintain normal mental concentration for variable operations over short periods and moderate concentration for repetitive tasks over long periods.
- Extensive computer use with frequent interruptions.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, sit, reach, assist and transport patients in wheelchairs, and lift up to 10 lbs.
- Standard office conditions with noise levels above average.
- Periodic exposure to fumes, chemicals, hazards, or diseases.
- Work shifts required, including night, weekend, and holiday coverage as needed.
