Job Description
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering seeks a highly skilled Senior Electronics Technician to support instructional and research activities. This position plays a critical role in the design, construction, integration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of complex laboratory and research equipment.
The successful candidate will work closely with faculty, students, and staff to develop and sustain custom-built experimental systems, including both new, innovative prototypes and legacy research apparatus. The role requires strong hands-on capability, creative problem-solving, and the ability to translate conceptual ideas into functional hardware.
Key Responsibilities:
* Design, build, install, and maintain complex laboratory equipment used in teaching and research.
* Design, develop and implement electronic circuits and embedded systems (e.g., Arduino, microcontrollers, sensor/actuator interfaces) to meet project requirements.
* Interpret schematics and translate them into fully functional hardware systems.
* Integrate electrical/electronic components with mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems into cohesive experimental platforms.
* Collaborate with faculty and students on custom research and instructional projects, providing technical guidance and hands-on support.
* Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair a wide range of equipment, including legacy and one-of-a-kind systems.
* Assist in upgrading older systems with modern electronics, controls, and data acquisition capabilities.
* Support data acquisition and instrumentation systems; assist with implementation where needed (e.g., LabVIEW or similar platforms).
* Maintain documentation, schematics, and records for developed and repaired systems.
* Ensure safe work practices when working with electrical power systems and laboratory equipment.
Work Environment and Expectations
* Work is performed in laboratory and shop environments with a wide range of equipment and technologies.
* Projects are often custom, evolving, and non-standard, requiring adaptability and creative engineering solutions.

Minimum Qualifications
An Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of education and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications
* Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in electronics construction, maintenance, or troubleshooting.
* Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.
* Experience assembling and debugging electronic circuits and systems.
* Familiarity with electrical power systems and safe laboratory practices.
* Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
* Experience with embedded systems and microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar platforms).
* Experience with sensor integration, signal conditioning, and data acquisition systems.
* Familiarity with LabVIEW or other instrumentation/control software.
* Experience working in research, academic, or prototype development environment.
* Basic mechanical aptitude and experience integrating electronics into mechanical systems.
* Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with students, faculty, and multidisciplinary teams.
Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $19.25-$27.40 hourly.
Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
