This position will be located at the Missouri Geological Survey, 111 Fairgrounds Rd., Rolla MO 65401 with significant time in the field.
Position OverviewBedrock Mapping Geologists at MGS enjoy professional autonomy while working with a deeply collaborative and professional team. This position will routinely publish authoritative, scientific documents as well as have the opportunity to attend national conferences and collaborate with other professional teams. As a geologist, you will support the core values of the Geological Survey Program which include Technical Competency, Service, Professionalism, Ingenuity, and Cooperation.
Responsibilities- Conduct geologic investigations related to mineral resources, including critical and metallic minerals, ore deposits, bedrock geology, and geologic structures related to Earth
MRI grants or other funding sources. - Identify and evaluate mineral resources by conducting surveys, analyzing rock and mineral samples, and creating geological models to assess ore quality and quantity.
- Coordinate data analysis of geologic samples including, but not limited to, petrography and geochemical analyses.
- Digitally create geologic maps or models based on geologic data and analysis and implement maps into geodatabase schema.
- Use GIS software to manage projects, model data, and produce publications.
- Present precompetitive critical minerals data to internal and external stakeholders, including industry and academia.
- Maintain professional credential as a Missouri Registered Geologist (RG).
- Geology – Working knowledge of geologic principles and their applications.
- Cartography – Familiarity with the concepts and tools applied to map production.
- Writing – Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts in written form for various audiences.
- Project Management – Balancing demands of time and energy regarding assigned projects.
Physical Requirements
- Master’s degree in geology, or closely related field and have completed, at a minimum, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of credit in geology including coursework required by the Missouri Board of Geologist Registration.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds, work alone in remote areas, walk long distances in hilly and rugged terrain, climb steep slopes, carry geologic specimens out of the field, and use shovel, hand auger, and hammer.
