? Works collegially with other staff members to develop appropriate counseling interventions/programs. The counselor seeks to gain the commitment of students and staff by focusing on personal growth that is the key to harnessing the potential of the individual. To reflect this criterion, the counselor: ? Identifies individual and group needs and plans appropriate strategies including those that involve the use of available up-to-date technologies.
? Demonstrates trustworthiness and merits the confidence of students, parents and staff. ? Assists students in student goal setting in order to increase student motivation and ownership. ? Helps the student in self understanding so that the student may gain an awareness and make maximum use of his/her abilities, aptitudes, achievements, interests, and goals. ? Demonstrates sensitivity to differences in abilities, gender, race and ethnicity, learning style, social and cultural backgrounds.
The counselor becomes increasingly competent at creating a pathway for learning through effective planning and assessment of guidance and counseling interventions. To reflect this criterion, the counselor:

? Formulates objectives and appropriate strategies to assure continuity of effective guidance and counseling services. ? Identifies individual and group needs and plans the use of appropriate counseling intervention. ? Acquires pertinent information from a variety of sources: student records, consultation with appropriate school personnel, consultation with students, parents, and other appropriate agencies or individuals outside of school. ? Assesses the effectiveness of intervention strategies The counselor becomes increasingly competent in effectively managing the learning environment.
The counselor applies effective group management techniques to support a positive and productive learning environment. To reflect this criterion, the counselor: ? Uses time and space productively and efficiently in order to support optimal learning. ? Maintains a high level of student participation and engagement with appropriate time on task. ? Establishes procedures that ensure smooth transition from one activity to another.
? Supports implementation of a plan for administering all group standardized tests with the school staff. The counselor meets individual and group case load responsibilities. To reflect This criterion, the counselor: ? Attends to referrals in a timely and responsive manner. ? Refers students to appropriate support personnel as needed. ? Is available at reasonable times outside scheduled appointments. ?
Employs strategies for crisis intervention. ? Actively reaches out to contact students. The counselor becomes increasingly competent in developing a community of learners through emphasis on team building. To reflect this criterion, the counselor: ? Seeks out and/or collaborates with school-based specialists, resource personnel, technology specialists, and administrators to better design curricula and instructional modifications in the learning process. ?
Uses a variety of questioning techniques to stimulate student participation, including those which encourage and guide critical and independent thinking and the development of ideas. ? Communicates clearly in writing and speaking. ? Builds appropriate, positive relationships with students, parents, and staff to enhance students' abilities to learn effectively. ? Functions effectively in a multilingual, multicultural and economically diverse society.
The counselor becomes increasingly competent in implementing the vision of the Floyd County School System. To reflect this criterion, the counselor: ? Works collaboratively with other staff in planning and implementing interdisciplinary curriculum, instruction, and other school programs and shares expertise and new ideas with colleagues. ? Participates in school, student, faculty, and staff activities, as well as professional organizations, collegial study groups and system-wide committees.
? Uses available resources to analyze, expand, and refine professional knowledge and skills (i.e. professional organizations, academic coursework, school-based staff, administrative and community resources, and other colleagues). ? Works constructively with others to identify school problems and to develop and implement solutions. ? Models the skills, attitudes, values and processes central to the mission and vision of the Floyd County School System.
