The Educational Sign Language Interpreter provides communication access for students who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf Blind, enabling them to fully participate in educational, social, and extracurricular activities. This position requires a versatile professional capable of adapting interpretation strategies to match the developmental, cognitive, and linguistic needs of students ranging from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade.

For early childhood placements (Pre-K to Kindergarten), the interpreter plays a critical role in facilitating initial language acquisition, social-emotional development, and classroom navigation.

• Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and receptive/expressive interpreting skills.
• Deep understanding of childhood development and language acquisition processes.
• Ability to remain flexible and patient, particularly when working with young children who are still developing behavioral and linguistic stamina.

Essential duties of this position are noted below. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

• Provide high-quality, real-time interpretation and/or transliteration (ASL, Conceptually Accurate Signed English, or other designated sign system) of classroom lectures, discussions, announcements, and school-wide activities.
• Voice-interpret (sign-to-voice) the student’s signs, speech, or gestures to peers, teachers, and staff.
• Early Childhood Focus: Adapt signing space, pacing, and vocabulary to fit the developmental level of young children. Use expressive facial features and body language to maintain engagement and foster language immersion.

• Serve as an integral member of the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, providing insights on communication accessibility and the student’s utilization of interpreting services.
• Confer with general and special education teachers regularly to review upcoming lesson plans, technical vocabulary, and classroom materials.
• Educate classroom peers and school staff on basic sign language and Deaf culture to foster an inclusive environment.
