Speech Language Pathologist

Under the general supervision of the school Principal, the SLP becomes increasingly competent in creating the educational vision and gaining student commitment as well as develops a vision of education, consistent with the needs of the child, Floyd County Schools and the state and federal educational agencies.

Education/Certification Requirements

Education:

Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teach assignments.

Certification: GA state certification preferred for position. Teaching certification in related areas.

Essential Functions

  • Has a personal vision of encouraging students to be confident learners and using that vision to guide goals, expectations and standards for student work
  • Utilizes various data sources to address instruction
  • Keeps current with education research literature and applies knowledge to the instructional program
  • Gains the commitment of students by focusing on the power of the concept that personal growth is the key to harnessing the potential of the individual
  • Identifies individual and group needs and plans appropriate strategies including those that involve the use of available up-to-date technologies
  • Communicates standards, expectations, and guidelines regarding the quality and quantity of student work to students and parents implements individualized approaches to assessment
  • Uses prompt feedback and student goal setting in order to increase student motivation and ownership of learning
  • Develops and supports students' awareness of themselves as life-long learners
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to differences in abilities, gender, race and ethnicity learning style, social and cultural backgrounds
  • Becomes increasingly competent at creating a pathway for learning through effective planning and assessment of student learning
  • The SLP plans instruction effectively
  • Identifies individual and group needs and plans the use of appropriate instructional strategies
  • Uses materials and resources, including technologies that are appropriately matched to instructional goals and to individual student learning styles
  • Incorporates a variety of instructional strategies into daily lessons
  • Integrates the teaching of reading, listening, writing, speaking, and the use of appropriate learning tools (e.g. calculators, computers, etc.) within the discipline
  • Frames curriculum around essential questions in the discipline that provide opportunities for reasoning, logic, analysis, and synthesis when planning units, lessons and assessments
  • Utilizes student data to make data-driven decisions relative to instruction
  • Provides effective assessment of student learning
  • Determines specific and challenging standards for student learning and assesses progress toward those standards
  • Schedules time for individual and interactive reflection on student progress with the student
  • Prepares and maintains accurate and efficient recordkeeping systems of the quality and quantity of student work
  • Communicates student progress to parents, students, and appropriate staff members in a timely fashion using a range of information including portfolios, anecdotal records and other artifacts
  • Becomes increasingly competent in effectively managing the learning environment
  • Applies classroom management techniques to establish a positive and productive learning environment
  • Uses time and classroom space productively and efficiently in order to promote optimal learning
  • Maintains a high level of student participation and engagement with appropriate time on task
  • Establishes classroom procedures that ensure smooth transition from one activity to another
  • Interacts and communicates positively and productively with students in groups and individual settings
  • The SLP maintains and models appropriate standards of behavior, mutual respect, and safety
  • Encourages student achievement and responsibility by reinforcing desired students behaviors that demonstrate attitudes of fairness and respect
  • Establishes and carries out reasonable and routine classroom rules and procedures
  • Maintains appropriate professional boundaries with students
  • Maintains a systematic approach to discipline by establishing and administering a consistent and fair set of rules supporting appropriate expectations
  • Becomes increasingly competent in developing a community of learners through emphasis on team building
