Job Description:

Builds collaborative professional relationships to support quality healthcare delivery.

Works independently in a professional, team-oriented environment with effective written and oral communication skills. Demonstrates accountability in learning and implementing processes that improve laboratory standards. Performs histology procedures on surgical specimens, tissue samples, and body fluids within approved guidelines to meet turnaround time and quality standards. Receives and processes clinical and pre-operative diagnostic information to assist pathologists in specimen interpretation. Transports body fluids and exudates to appropriate departments for testing outside of anatomic pathology.

Assists supervisors and co-workers in daily laboratory operations and solves problems with minimal supervision. May perform, review, and maintain quality control testing on reagents, equipment, and testing kits per regulatory guidelines. Conducts equipment maintenance and calibrations according to scheduled intervals and operational needs. May oversee technicians, phlebotomists, and trainees, and may serve as acting supervisor in their absence. May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area;

employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment. May perform routine and special histology procedures, assists with frozen sections, and supports pathology report completion through transcription coordination. Follows safety policies including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and completes required training for handling hazardous waste.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proficiency in operating computers, telephone, fax, copier, printers, microtome, cryostat, microscope, stainer, cover slipper, tissue processor, embedding center, monitored refrigerators & freezers, and centrifuges.
  • Demonstrated mathematical, computer reasoning, and language skills at the college level (1 year) preferred.
  • Must possess the necessary knowledge and skills to provide care that addresses the physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs appropriate to the age of the patients served within the department.
Education:
  • Associate [Preferred]
  • Bachelor's [Preferred]
Field of Study:
  • in biology, chemistry, mathematical, computer reasoning, and language skills at the college level (1 year)
Work Experience:
  • 1+ year of approved clinical laboratory experience [Required]
