JOB SUMMARY:

This is an advanced level position in the Transit Department. In addition to the responsibilities described in Fleet Maintenance Technician I and II job descriptions, the work of this position involves performing complex failure repairs and diagnostics of all types of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems associated with maintenance and repair of the Transit Department buses, other department vehicles and equipment.

This position is responsible for assisting the Shop Supervisor in overseeing other technicians as needed.

KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

:
  • Thorough workings knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the inspection, maintenance, prevention, and repair of a wide variety of buses and other Transit vehicles.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer software programs:
    Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and One Drive.
  • Must be competent at using service and maintenance tools and equipment and be familiar with different lubricants and service parts specifically made for different makes of mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge with all aspects of Fleet Maintenance operations and must understand the functions of the major components and systems.
  • Must be competent at using service and maintenance tools and equipment and be familiar with different lubricants and service parts specifically made for different makes of mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend documents and instruction manuals and have good analytical skills to diagnose problems and make decisions about the most suitable repairs.
  • Knowledge of electrical and air conditioning systems diagnostics and repair.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical operating principles of heavy diesel engines and of mechanical repair of buses and other equipment to include brakes, suspension, and transmission fundamentals sufficient for performing safety inspections.
  • Skill in diagnosing defects in all equipment to include, light duty, medium duty and heavy-duty equipment and making necessary repairs.
  • Skill in the use and safe operation of tools and machinery used in heavy equipment repair such as hoists, lifts, presses, diesel engine analysis equipment, arc and gas welders, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to attend training on new and/or improved equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and analyze when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
  • Ability to communicate clear and effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must keep work area in a safe manner by keeping clean and neat at all times.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work without constant direct supervision.
  • Must be detailed oriented and mentally alert.
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Must be able to mentor and assist other technicians with new processes.
  • Must be able to document new and known issues in proprietary maintenance computer program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A High School Degree or equivalent followed by vocational training complemented by 3-8 years' experience in general vehicle servicing and small engine repair or a related trade. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job, are acceptable as meeting the requirements for this position. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification helpful but not required.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend documents and instruction manuals and have good analytical skills to diagnose problems and make decisions about the most suitable repairs.
  • Position requires on-call availability according to departmental schedule. Employee is compensated for status.
  • Must have ability to work overtime as emergencies and departmental needs occur. Some occasions may occur with little to no notice.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) 100 and 700 within three (3) months of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's license from state of residency.
  • A Commercial Driver's license is required with a Passenger Endorsement within 6 months of hire date in order to perform duties of a bus operator.
