Position: Teacher Assistant (2 openings)

Teacher Assistant

The Rome City School District is currently accepting applications for Teacher Assistants. Candidate must hold a valid NYS Teaching Assistant Certification, or meet requirements, apply, and obtain their certification within six months from the date of hire.

The Teacher Assistant is a full-time, 10-month position (6 hours per day) that supports the classroom teacher in implementing and delivering educational programs tailored to meet the individual needs of students. This role involves both instructional and non-instructional duties within a special education setting and requires a proactive, communicative, and compassionate individual.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the teacher in delivering and implementing lesson plans, including small group activities, individual instruction, academic support, and supervision of seat work.
  • Substitute for the classroom teacher during absences, when necessary.
  • Provide supervision and support in non-classroom areas (e.g., bathroom, cafeteria, hallways, playground, field trips, and during bus duties).
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the classroom teacher regarding student progress, instructional activities, and the classroom environment.
  • Share observations, ideas, and concerns about individual students with the teacher and professional staff.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, administration, and parents.
  • Demonstrate initiative, creativity, and cooperation in supporting professional staff and student needs.
  • Respond appropriately to students' interpersonal and behavioral issues.
  • Promote and model age-appropriate behaviors.
  • Attend faculty meetings, staff development sessions, and required in-service training.
  • Perform clerical tasks and prepare instructional materials as needed.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by the teacher or building principal.
Qualifications and Skills
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must hold or be eligible for a New York State Teaching Assistant certification. Requirements are available through the following link: https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)..html.
  • If you have never held a New York State Teaching Assistant Certificate, you must apply, meet the requirements, and obtain your Initial Teaching Assistant certificate within 6 months from the date of hire.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; clear articulation in English with proficiency in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of child development, special education learning principles, and behavior modification techniques.
  • Ability to follow and implement oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Capable of working independently and taking initiative in a classroom setting.
  • Creative, imaginative, and cooperative in classroom and school-wide activities.
  • Ability to manage responsibilities with professionalism and maintain confidentiality.
