Job Summary

A Preferred Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher or teaching assistant. The Preferred Substitute Teacher is District assigned and will be assigned to classrooms at the direction of the building principal or designee.

Essential Functions
  • Assumes all duties and responsibilities of the regular teacher in a given day. May also be required to attend staff meetings, parent conferences, etc.
  • Assumes the teacher's responsibility for supervision of students in the building, on the grounds, or on field trips.
    • Responsible for supervising students at all times.
    • Carries out written plans left by the regular teacher for the day's lessons and routines such as, but not limited to: maintaining discipline, monitoring halls during passing period, completing other supervisions such as lunch duty.
    • Marks pupil assignments and classroom work according to school and teacher evaluation policies.
    • Records pupil absences according to school procedures.
    • Maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning.
    • Leaves a clear, written summary for the teacher of the work covered and other relevant comments.
    • Becomes familiar with and follows school and division procedures for routines and emergencies, promotes the proper use and care of school property, and takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety.
  • Performs duties during planning periods as requested by teacher or school administrator.
  • Maintains effective, positive working relationships with other employees and the public and deals with all situations courteously and tactfully.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times: in classroom, school site, administrative buildings and in the community.
  • Consults with the principal and/or staff to resolve questions and/or concerns.
    • Knowledge of current teaching techniques, preferred.
    • Accepts personal responsibility for decisions and conduct.
    • Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures, which are available at all buildings.
    • Enforces and supports District and School policies, philosophies and objectives with students and parents.
    • May be assigned to another District building if no vacancy exists in assigned building for the day.
Qualifications

Education/Licensure

Must hold appropriate State of Illinois Substitute License or Professional Educator License.

Other

  • Meets all mandated health requirements.
  • Documentation of a clear criminal record.
  • Complies with drug-free workplace rules and board policies.

Work Environment and Physical Activity

Preferred Substitutes need to stand for the majority of the day and may also sit for long periods. They may be required to reach and/or lift more than 25 pounds. Must speak and understand English proficiently.

Terms of Employment

Daily rate is in accordance with the Preferred Substitute contractual agreement. Preferred Substitutes will work for all student attendance days each year, which will align with the annually approved school calendar, along with SIP and Institute Days as needed.
