Student Employee, Peer Tutor
Position Type: Part time, Non‑exempt
Department: Tutoring and Learning Center, Division:
Student Development
Reports to: Manager, Tutoring and Learning Center
Hiring Range: $15.00 per hour (FWS eligible)
EssentialJob Duties &
Key Responsibilities
- Represent the college professionally and uphold core values.
- Provide tutoring in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, and/or Math via one‑to‑one and small group sessions.
- Maintain accurate records of tutoring activities using Academic Success Tracker.
- Distribute flyers and promote tutorial services in classrooms and on campus.
- Select appropriate instructional support materials with coordination from leaders.
- Participate in staff meetings, in‑services, and training as required.
- Assist with receptionist duties and light office work (e.g., keeping the TLC neat, running errands, preparing materials, filing, photocopying).
- Promote and coordinate programs and events.
- Assist with note‑taking duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent.
- Completed at least one semester of college‑level courses, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Received an A or B in the subject area to be tutored; preference for students who have completed three or more courses in that subject.
- Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at JJC during the fall or spring semester.
- Ability to work a minimum of 10 hours per week.
- Approval from the TLC Manager.
- One faculty reference.
- Excellent customer service and strong communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain FERPA confidentiality.
- Patience, problem‑solving ability, and a willingness to accept responsibility.
- Ability to establish cooperative, culturally competent relationships with colleagues and the community.
- Two or more faculty references.
- Previous work experience.
- Commitment to work in the TLC for at least one full academic year.
- Proficiency in English and Spanish (verbal and written).
- Demonstrated multicultural competence.
Normal office demands; duties performed indoors and in outdoor environments as needed.
Work ScheduleVaries by semester; up to 20 hours per week during fall and spring, up to 28 hours with supervisor approval during summer and holiday breaks.
