ABOUT THE POSITIONThe Compounding Supervisor is responsible for leading and overseeing all compounding operations within an FDA-regulated cosmetic manufacturing facility. This role ensures the safe, accurate, and efficient production of bulk cosmetic products while maintaining compliance with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), FDA regulations, quality standards, and company policies.
The Compounding Supervisor oversees personnel, equipment, documentation, material handling, batch execution, and process improvements to support operational excellence and product quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Supervise daily compounding activities to ensure production schedules, quality standards, and customer requirements are met.
- Oversee the weighing, staging, dispensing, and blending of raw materials according to approved manufacturing procedures and batch records.
- Ensure all batches are produced in accordance with Master Manufacturing Records (MMRs) and approved formulations.
- Monitor production efficiency, labor utilization, and equipment performance.
- Coordinate changeovers, cleaning, and sanitation activities to minimize downtime and prevent cross-contamination.
- Collaborate with Planning, Quality, Warehouse, and Packaging departments to support production objectives.
- Ensure compliance with FDA Cosmetic Good Manufacturing Practices (21 CFR Part 117 where applicable, MoCRA requirements, and cosmetic GMP guidance), company SOPs, and quality standards.
- Review and approve batch manufacturing records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
- Ensure proper documentation of all production activities, deviations, investigations, and corrective actions.
- Support internal audits, customer audits, and regulatory inspections.
- Partner with Quality Assurance to investigate nonconformances, consumer complaints, and out-of-specification results.
- Maintain strict adherence to traceability, lot control, and document retention requirements.
- Lead, coach, and develop Compounding Technicians and Lead Compounders.
- Conduct employee training on GMPs, SOPs, safety procedures, and manufacturing best practices.
- Manage employee performance through coaching, performance evaluations, and corrective action when necessary.
- Foster a culture of accountability, quality, safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure compounding equipment is properly operated, cleaned, calibrated, and maintained.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance activities with the Maintenance department.
- Monitor critical process parameters and troubleshoot processing issues.
- Identify opportunities for process optimization, waste reduction, and efficiency improvements.
- Assist in validation and qualification activities for equipment and manufacturing processes.
- Ensure availability of raw materials, components, and production supplies.
- Verify proper material identification, status labeling, and inventory control.
- Monitor material usage and investigate variances.
- Ensure accurate reconciliation of raw materials and batch yields.
- Maintain FIFO (First-In, First-Out) and inventory traceability practices.
- Promote and enforce compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety programs.
- Ensure employees utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Conduct routine safety inspections and hazard assessments.
- Investigate accidents, near-misses, and safety incidents and implement corrective actions.
