Training Officer, EMS Response, and Community Care Coordinator ($93,822/yr)

Looking for an opportunity to exercise your leadership, decision-making, and lead community paramedicine? The Romulus Fire Department is seeking the right candidate for the position of Training Officer. The Training Officer will report directly to the Fire Chief, leading all Fire Department training programs in addition to the development, implementation, and coordination of community-based EMS initiatives focused on opioid response, substance use disorder, and recovery-oriented systems of care.

While ensuring medical compliance with all required certifications, standards, and best practices, the Training Officer will lead the City’s paramedic program, including the coordination, delivery, and evaluation of both fire and EMS training.

About the role

Oversee and manage all Fire Department training programs
, including fire suppression, EMS, recruit, in-service, specialty, and advanced certification training; ensure compliance with State of Michigan training and continuing education requirements; evaluate and implement evidence-based training to enhance operational readiness; maintain comprehensive training records; and serve as the department's Training Officer and primary liaison for training coordination with external agencies and partners.

Develop, implement, and manage internal and external training, community education, and a comprehensive fire-based opioid response and community care program
, including prevention, outreach, stigma-reduction, safe prescription disposal, naloxone training, post-overdose follow-up, harm reduction initiatives, and coordinated partnerships with healthcare providers, public health agencies, treatment facilities, and community organizations to facilitate referral pathways and recovery services.

Assist in policy development, program evaluation, and system coordination
; prepare and maintain reports and documentation; represent the Fire Department in meetings, committees, and regional partnerships; provide training and educational presentations to staff and the community; and perform other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief.

About you
  • Associate’s Degree (credits equivalent to), in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services, Public Health, Public Administration, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university (Bachelor’s Degree preferred)
  • State of Michigan licensure as a Paramedic
  • Firefighter I and II Certification
  • Fire Officer 1 and 2
  • EMS Instructor Coordinator Certification (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe)
  • Demonstrated qualifications or certifications related to fire and/or EMS instruction or training management preferred
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in fire service, EMS, training, community paramedicine, or a closely related field
  • Experience in training program development, instruction, or interagency coordination strongly preferred
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and identify trends
  • Ability to deliver training and public presentations to diverse audiences
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, healthcare providers, community organizations, and the public
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, initiative, and discretion in sensitive situations
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
