Job Description & How to Apply Below
Romulus, Michigan | Fleet Maintenance Shop
If you're the kind of mechanic who'd rather be turning wrenches than sitting in meetings, this is the kind of shop that makes sense.
We're looking for a solid, hands-on Master Mechanic to work in a busy fleet environment. This isn't just passenger cars - you'll see a mix of cars, diesel trucks, salt trucks, street sweepers, fire trucks, and construction equipment. Every day looks a little different.
Right now, the sweet spot is someone with a strong auto background who can handle passenger vehicles and light duty work - and be trained up on the heavy equipment and diesel side as they go.
What the work looks like
You'll be:
- Diagnosing and repairing gas and diesel engines
- Working on transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, steering systems, and electrical
- Maintaining and repairing plows, sweepers, fire apparatus, and heavy equipment
- Doing field calls and occasional towing/roadside repairs
- Welding and fabrication work when needed
- Using diagnostic tools and shop systems to troubleshoot issues
- Handling preventative maintenance across a mixed fleet
Schedule
- Monday - Friday | 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
- OT is available year-round - not required, but always there if you want it
- $24 - $30/hr depending on experience and certification
- Not the highest hourly rate out there - but the total package is where this job wins
This is a union position with a strong long-term setup:
- Excellent union benefit package
- $0 premium health care
- 10 vacation days + 9 personal days
- 11.5% employer retirement contribution (minimal employee contribution)
- Stable, steady work environment
- OT available whenever you want to pick it up
- 5+ years as an automotive or fleet mechanic (or equivalent hands-on experience)
- Michigan State Mechanic Certification
- CDL A (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire)
- Strong diagnostic, electrical, and mechanical repair skills
- Comfortable working independently and in a shop environment
- Open to learning diesel and heavy equipment if not already experienced
This isn't a flat-rate dealership grind. It's steady shop work with:
- strong union protection
- top-tier benefits
- predictable hours
- and plenty of overtime if you want it
