Position: Journeyman Electrician - Swing - Roseburg, OR

Journeyman Electrician - Swing - Roseburg, OR (Construction)

Reports To: Electrical Supervisor

Department: Maintenance

Hours per shift: Employee works 10‑hour shifts with three 10‑minute breaks and a 30‑minute unpaid lunch break. Schedule fluctuates depending on machine‑center downtime and mill needs.

Position

Purpose:

Maintain high levels of production by minimizing downtime through predictive and preventive maintenance of all equipment. Bring forward issues and resolve them via formal action planning. Work closely with Maintenance, Production, and Management teams.

Position Functions

Essential Functions – ADA designated; all listed tasks are required for the role.

Level 1 Functions
  • Familiar with the mill electrical system (MCCs, disconnects, machines, and conveying systems).
  • Blueprint reading.
  • Installations by code.
  • Install conduit level, straight, according to code or better, depending on application.
  • Troubleshoot and repair 120 vac to 480 vac control power.
  • Repair low‑voltage AC and DC.
  • Troubleshoot power supplies of all types (low, multi‑voltage, constant).
  • Make complete prints of installations.
  • Handle 3‑phase power, MCCs, motors, relay logic, and auxiliary contacts.
Level 2 Functions (additional to Level
1)
  • Good understanding of machine‑center control/electrical systems.
  • Know how to use timers, counters, ladder logic, and force functions.
  • Know how to troubleshoot PLC program logic; replace processors and modules.
  • Basic knowledge of AC frequency drives and soft starters.
  • Understand plant optimizer systems; restart and calibrate scanners.
  • Read and interpret plant production and downtime reports; reset and restart computer systems.
  • Understand HMI, Panel View, and Message View systems; interface with Plant PLC network.
  • Complete PLC programming / frequency drive classes once per year.
Level 3 Functions (additional to Levels 1 &
2)
  • Complete understanding of machine‑center control/electrical systems.
  • Change configuration files and back up plant optimizer systems.
  • Modify plant production and downtime report systems; back up as needed.
  • Alter HMI, Panel View, and Message View systems; back up throughout.
  • Change Plant PLC network.
  • Layout and complete moderately complex projects: conduit layout, wire sizing, control wiring, MCC & motor sizing.
Non‑Essential Functions

Perform other duties and functions as assigned by supervisor for production and cleaning purposes.

Working Environment

(1) Inside: 50 % of time. Temperature averages 80 °F; extremes 10 °F to 120 °F.
(2) Outside: 50 % of time. Noise or vibration from machine operation and forklifts. Hazards: see Job Hazard Analysis.
(3) Atmospheric conditions: limited dust, water mist, dry wood odors, no gases, no poor ventilation. Worker stands on an elevated wooden platform with rubber mats, moving in front of a dry conveyor 3 ½‑4 ft high. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Physical Demands

Requires constant use of hearing and vision, frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling, reaching, and occasional lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling of more than 50 lbs.

Skills

Excellent hand‑eye coordination, continuous vision/hearing usage, peripheral vision for forklift and coworker awareness. Must read, speak, and understand Job Hazard Analysis, machine lockout procedures, and safety training. Work largely with a cleanup partner; self‑directed, efficient, organized, and decisive.

Safety

1. Perform only maintenance you are trained for and keep all body parts out of machinery.
2. Always use the 14‑step lockout/tagout procedure before maintenance, clearing jams, or entering machinery; be aware of stored energy.
3. Use proper body mechanics (avoid overreach, request assistance to move loads).
4. Wear proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection).
5. Communicate with coworkers (e.g., forklift drivers).
6. Read and write during safety training.

Endurance

Never / Not required – Sitting, Standing, Walking, Change Positions: 10 hours at one time, 10 hours in a workday.

Physical Requirements

Lifting: maximum 50 lbs without assistance; >50 lbs requires two or more people or devices.
Carrying: maximum 10‑50 lbs without assistance; >50 lbs requires two or more people or devices.
Pushing/Pulling: see duty specifics as applicable.
