Reports To: Planer Superintendent
Hours per shift: 8-11 hours per shift. Swing Shift, hours as required to meet the objectives of the position
FSLA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Position
Purpose:
Lead all aspects of the planer to include (not limited to): guiding a crew of approximately 25 employees. This includes performing payroll functions, evaluations, crew meetings, quality checks, product scheduling, coordinating and/or covering crew break periods, safety trainings, policy enforcement, production paperwork, inventory control, and backing up the Planer/Sawmill Supervisor as needed.
These duties are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job.
Produce, maintain, and complete any documentation required and/or requested including daily, shift, monthly or quarterly reports. Special assignments may be included.
Apply a thorough knowledge of processes and safety related to planer operations.
Operate various machine centers and equipment throughout the planer and shipping.
Observe, encourage, demonstrate, and role model safe behavior on a daily basis.
Gather and analyze machine center data and follow up on any variances or concerns.
Ensure that Supervisor Safety Expectations are being followed.
Maintain employee records including time and attendance, evaluations, and trainings.
Cooperate with Sawmill/Planer Supervisor and HR on all employee disciplinary matters.
Routinely observe products at all stages of production.
Communicate problem areas to supervisor.
Attend weekly KPI meetings to discuss safety, crewing, efficiency and downtime as requested.
Continuously look for ways to develop and implement new processes and improve existing processes.
Fully understand the QC process and work directly with QC to make product quality decisions as well as production decisions.
Report changes to any processes, major breakdowns and production needs to supervisor.
Additional duties as assigned.
Non-Essential FunctionsThese duties are secondary in nature and are not classified as ADA essential.
Lead may be responsible at times for cleanup jobs as needed. When applicable, he may assist maintenance personnel in basic maintenance procedures.
Working Environment(1) Inside 40%, average temperature 70°F, extreme low temperature 10°F, extreme high temperature 105°F. (2) Outside 60%. Noise or vibration: machine noise from operation and nearby machines including forklifts. Hazards: see Job Hazard Analysis. (3) Atmospheric conditions: fumes limited, dust: wood particle, mist: water, odors: none, gases: none, poor ventilation: none.
Personal Protective Equipment RequiredEye protection, hearing protection, leather gloves, approved footwear, safety vest, and other PPE as required by hazard.
Physical DemandsMust be able to lift up to 50 lbs, carry up to 50 lbs, push/pull objects up to 50 lbs, climb stairs and ladders, work at heights, and perform tasks involving standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, and using arms, wrists, hands and grasping. Requires use of hands, vision, hearing and speech. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
Mental DemandsMust be able to problem‑solve, build employee development and handle employee issues. Must concentrate in a noisy environment, manage frequent interruptions, juggle multiple projects, meet deadlines, exercise independent judgment and perform other mental tasks.

Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery. Always use the 14‑step lockout/tagout procedure before maintenance, clearing jams or entering machinery; be aware of stored energy. Use proper body mechanics. Use proper PPE. Communicate with co‑workers. Reading and writing required during safety training.
