Job Overview

The Camp Counselor is responsible for a variety of duties and activities associated with the interaction, supervision and care of participants in the summer preschool camp program. The counselor ensures the campers maintain a safe environment at all times and participate in a high‑quality program. $15/hour, approximate 20‑30 hours/week depending on need, June – August 2026; training in May 2026.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • One year of experience working with children.
  • Working knowledge of age characteristics and appropriate activities for children ages 3‑12.
  • Demonstrates ability to make good judgments and be aware of immediate surroundings.
  • Ability to deal with kids, residents, staff and job responsibilities under stressful conditions.
  • Respond to and handle children’s behaviors in a positive, appropriate manner.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Self‑motivated and responsible.
  • Follows directions and communicates in English verbally and in writing.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required.
  • Enjoys working outside in warm/hot weather.
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities to perform required work.
  • Energetic and able to manage a group of participants in a manner that encourages social growth, safety and fun.
Responsibilities
  • Direct leadership of all daily activities and events.
  • Assist in organizing and structuring large and small group activities.
  • Set up and participate in day camp activities.
  • Cleans up after activities and at the end of the day.
  • Ensure all personal property of campers is carefully labeled and stored properly; check and store them inside the building upon arrival.
  • Campers and counselors bring sack lunches and eat together; dispose of uneaten food properly. Lunches should never be left outdoors or in the sun; fast food/restaurant purchases prohibited during camp hours.
  • Maintain headcounts of campers in the morning, at swim times and throughout the day.
  • Supervise campers and be present on the pool deck and in the water during swim times.
  • Enforce safety rules during day camp activities; complete accident report forms as necessary.
  • Notify the Camp Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor of problems or concerns with individual campers or staff members.
  • Administer first aid to staff and campers as needed.
  • Attend required meetings, training and special events as required.
  • Be aware of camp medications and allergies.
  • Encourage positive peer relationships within the group.
  • Demonstrate a mature and professional attitude through dependability, punctuality and genuine awareness.
  • Treat public complaints and concerns with utmost attention; be courteous at all times.
  • Present a clean, pleasant appearance and display a positive, enthusiastic and professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.
Physical Demands
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 30 lbs.
  • Participate in daily activities that may require strenuous physical activity.
  • Respond to situations quickly and accurately.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, bending, kneeling and reaching.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to participate in camp lead physical activities, projects and outings.
  • Normal range of hearing and vision (corrected or uncorrected).
  • Exposure to temperatures that may exceed 95 °F and ultraviolet sunrays.
