Public Safety Department Position

This recruitment is to fill multiple part-time vacancies in the Public Safety Department and to establish an eligibility list to be used for future vacancies. The examination process will consist of a competitive evaluation of qualifications based on a review of the application and supplemental questionnaire; therefore, it is to your advantage to provide as much detailed and relevant work experience.

Work schedule:

The position works a variable work schedule with an average of 8 to 24 hours per week, limited to 1,000 hours per fiscal year and is "at-will". Candidates must be available to work all assigned shifts, including evenings, weekends, split shifts, and holidays.

Summary:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties in a non-sworn capacity in support of the Public Safety Department's operations, services, and functions, including but not limited to the areas of patrol, traffic control, parking enforcement, animal control, community policing; performs other related duties as required.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Essential functions:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responds to non-emergency calls for service on civil and criminal misdemeanor incidents within scope of authority; writes reports on non-suspect involved incidents according to City policy and procedures.
  • Patrols the City to check for general security of property and citizens; identifies and reports suspicious activities; reports municipal code violations; reports hazards and dangerous activities that might affect the safety and general welfare of residents.
  • Processes and investigates complaints from citizens; interviews complainants and witnesses; follows established procedures to document findings and generate incident reports.
  • Assists law enforcement officers and City Code Enforcement Officers as requested; assists with traffic control, parking enforcement, and school crossing guard duties.
  • Handle all animal related calls and animal license canvassing.
  • Issues parking citations for violations of vehicle code and municipal code; requests towing services as needed; reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries.
  • Interprets and explains City codes, policies, and procedures to property owners and the general public; provides information and recommendations within scope of authority.
  • Coordinates efforts with other City Departments and regional agencies, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent and one year of customer service and/or public contact experience is required. Local government experience is desirable. Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Applicable Federal, State, and City codes, laws, statutes, and ordinances.
  • Public relations techniques used in public safety support activities.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Geography, roads, and landmarks of City and surrounding areas.
  • Principles of record keeping and records management.

Skill in:

  • Interpreting and applying statutes, rules, ordinances, codes and regulations.
  • Making independent decisions while working in the field, analyzing situations accurately, and following established procedures.
  • Dealing tactfully and courteously with the public and handling stressful situations and angry people.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of standard and specialized software.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
