Job Overview

Position:
Non‑Licensed Specialist (Deaf and Hard of Hearing Interpreter)

Hours: 6.75 to 7 hours/day, 10 month calendar

Effective Date: Beginning of the 2026-27 school year

Primary Responsibility

The primary responsibility of this role is to facilitate communication and provide access in the classroom setting. This includes conveying all educational content and intent, incidental information, and supporting social interactions. The interpreter should take into account the student's IEP goals, language and culture needs of all persons, Deaf and hearing, as well as the environment in order to provide the most effective interpretations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide students who are deaf and hard of hearing with sign language interpreting services in early childhood, elementary, and/or secondary settings within District 196; facilitate communication between hearing and deaf or hard of hearing consumers.
  • Adapt physical conditions to optimize students' visual access to interpreted message(s) in the classroom setting.
  • Adhere to the code of conduct for educational interpreters.
  • Ensure interpreting techniques are aligned with students' language level and follow student's individualized education plans as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with students, teachers and other staff; maintain confidentiality within the team; support communication between team members.
  • Help maintain safety of all students and the learning environment.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated skill and certification in expressive and receptive sign language interpreting.
  • RID‑NIC certification; OR 4.0+ on the EIPA and pass on the written exam; OR provisional certificate required.
  • Experience in an educational setting preferred.

Salary
  • Non‑Licensed Specialist – Provisional: $23.96 – $30.30/hr (based on 2025‑26 salary schedule)
  • Non‑Licensed Specialist – Licensed: $30.94 – $37.65/hr (based on 2025‑26 salary schedule)
