The special education teacher for Intermediate School District 917 will play a vital role in providing a consistent, safe environment conducive to learning by delivering a broad range of teaching services or specific learning programming and assisting students in developing skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed as a foundation for future learning. The teacher will utilize a variety of teaching and learning methods, model and encourage respect, communication, and competency during student work tasks and socialization, and maintain a non‑judgmental approach to ensure student safety and growth.
This role is performed in a team environment with collaboration, communication, and adaptability as keys to success, following District policy and State/Federal Laws.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that promote effective teaching strategies while adhering to the District philosophy and vision.
- Create a classroom environment that addresses the needs of individual learners, establish reasonable rules of classroom behavior, and employ appropriate teaching strategies to maximize time on task.
- Plan and implement individualized programs that meet student needs, including compliance with state and federal due‑process requirements; evaluate student achievements regularly using multiple assessment methods; provide progress and interim reports.
- Encourage student enthusiasm for learning and facilitate the work of other staff members in a collaborative environment.
- Communicate with parents promptly, maintaining positive and constructive relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.
- Share responsibility during the school day for supervising students in school areas.
- Protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities by taking necessary precautions.
- Uphold and enforce board policy, district goals, administrative procedures, school rules, and safety policies.
- Maintain appropriate work habits, including punctual attendance and productive use of conference and planning time.
- Attend workshops, seminars, conferences, staff development sessions, and committee meetings as required.
- Respect confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with professional ethics, state, and federal laws.
- Keep current in subject matter knowledge and learning theory, and share this knowledge for continual curriculum improvement.
- Utilize proactive behavior management techniques, reinforce positive behaviors, employ de‑escalation strategies, and redirect inappropriate behaviors; may be required to use restrictive procedures.
- Apply flexible thinking and remain calm during crisis situations, when necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree with coursework in education or a related field, and possess a current teaching license from the Professional Educators Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) in Special Education for ASD, EBD, and/or DCD (dual licensure preferred); equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Willingness and ability to work with students receiving high‑level special education services.
- Demonstrated knowledge of education principles, practices, and procedures; knowledge of effective teaching methodology; preference for special education practices.
- Preferably hold previous teaching experience in special education.
- Understand developmental appropriateness of materials and behavior.
- Willingness to complete training in Professional Crisis Management and implement restrictive procedures if needed.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, maintained under high‑stress and crisis situations.
- Basic computer and email skills; proficiency in core educational subject areas.
- Frequently require exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, standing, speaking, hearing, sitting, walking, lifting, and repetitive motions.
- Occasionally require exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and crouching.
- Standard vision requirements.
- Ability to tolerate sudden jarring movement.
- Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions and blood borne pathogens, possibly requiring personal protective equipment.
- Work environments may be moderately noisy.
