Overview
The City is now accepting applications for Paid-on-Call Firefighters! Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2026.
A Firefighter serves the City of Rosemount by responding to a wide variety of incidents, including fire suppression, prevention, rescues, hazardous materials mitigation and other emergency calls as required. The position also administers fire protection through public education and inspection and maintains fire equipment and protective clothing.
Responsibilities- Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps, laying hose, and performing fire suppression techniques.
- Gives emergency medical aid and assistance as required
- Performs rescue operations, high level rescue, extrication, and search
- Participates in building inspections and public fire prevention education.
- Protects the public from hazardous materials, power utilities, etc.
- Attends and participates in fire drills and meetings.
- Attends classes on firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects as required.
- Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates two-way radios.
- Maintains fire apparatus and equipment. Performs minor repairs to apparatus and equipment. Hangs, dries, and tests hoses.
- Assists in developing plans for emergency preparedness, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and fire prevention.
- Presents programs to the public on safety, medical, and fire prevention issues.
- Performs salvage operations such as covers, water damage prevention, removing debris, etc.
- Communicates clearly, calmly, and confidently in oral and written communications.
- May assist to coordinate, instruct, or supervise work of other firefighters.
- Participate in the Duty Crew Program as required by department policy.
Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of driver safety.
- Learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment.
- Learn and apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques.
- Perform strenuous tasks during emergency, training, or maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme height, intense heat, cold, smoke, or confined areas.
- Function, work and communicate effectively under emergency and stressful situations
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Exceptional communication skills orally and written
- Work effectively with other employees, agencies and members of the public.
- Ability to take command at fires, medicals, or rescues when no other senior firefighters are present.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Resident of Rosemount or live within a five-mile driving distance of a Rosemount fire station.
- Successful completion of departments training academy.
- Must possess or obtain State Certifications in Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Haz Mat Op’s, and Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) by end of probation. Training and testing provided.
- Successful completion of a two-year probationary period.
- Must respond to a minimum number of emergency calls, training, meetings, duty crew shifts and special events.
Physical Requirements and Activity
This work requires frequent lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds of force and occasionally lift and/or move up to 125 pounds of force; work regularly requires lifting and frequently standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions.
