This is a full-time, hands-on traveling position responsible for maintaining and repairing locomotives to help ensure safe, reliable equipment is available to support customer operations. This role requires regular regional travel and is ideal for someone who enjoys troubleshooting equipment, working independently, and performing hands-on mechanical work in different operating environments.

Job Description

The Regional Traveling Locomotive Mechanic is responsible for performing scheduled, preventive, and emergency maintenance on locomotives at customer and Railserve locations throughout an assigned region. This position diagnoses and repairs mechanical and electrical issues, performs preventive maintenance, communicates equipment status and repair needs, and helps ensure locomotives remain safe, reliable, and available for operation. Because this is a regional traveling position, employees must be comfortable traveling regularly to different locations based on maintenance needs and customer priorities.

Compensation

$20.00 – $30.00 per hour based on experience Overtime eligible

Duties
  • Perform scheduled, preventive, and emergency maintenance on company locomotives, including Gen-Set, SW, and GP models
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues affecting locomotive performance and reliability
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures and determine appropriate repair solutions
  • Travel to customer and Railserve locations to perform maintenance and repairs as needed
  • Communicate directly with customers regarding equipment status, upcoming repairs, and maintenance priorities
  • Perform inspections and identify potential mechanical, electrical, and safety concerns
  • Maintain accurate preventive maintenance checklists, invoices, shipping paperwork, expense reports, and other required documentation
  • Safely handle and dispose of environmental materials, including oil, diesel fuel, and other fluids
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, welding equipment, and other maintenance equipment
  • Conduct equipment safety assessments as directed
  • Recommend appropriate corrective actions when equipment or safety concerns are identified
  • Follow all company and customer safety procedures
  • Wear required personal protective equipment at all times
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Job Requirements
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting ability
  • Mechanical maintenance or repair experience preferred
  • Electrical troubleshooting experience is a plus
  • Associate degree or technical training in a mechanical-related field preferred; equivalent work experience will also be considered
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly throughout the assigned region
