POSITION TITLE:

Aide, Compliance and Academics Program (CAP)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Primary

Purpose:

To assist and support the compliance and academics program teacher in providing effective instruction and a positive teaching/learning environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major Responsibilities and Duties

* Cooperatively perform tasks under the supervision of the CAP teacher.

* Provide assistance to the CAP teacher in preparing and implementing Positive Behavior Supports and the Texas Behavior Support Initiative.

* Assist in teaching and implementing school rules and routines at the campus.

* Provide academic/vocational instruction to individual students and with groups as directed by the CAP teacher on student Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals/objectives and state assessment tasks.

* Escort students to elective and outclasses assigned by CAP teacher.

* Collect data on student IEP goals/objectives as directed by the CAP teacher.

* Performs assigned supervision of students during lunch periods, play periods, and on field trips.

* Perform assigned non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack time, toileting, clothing routines and self-help skills as applicable.

* Assist medically fragile or physically disabled students for the purpose of maintaining students' personal hygiene.

* Participate in the transfer of non and semi-ambulatory students.

* Appropriately manage students physically, verbally, and non-verbally who may be out of emotional/behavioral control.

* Teach and practice social skills in alignment with age/grade/program expectations.

* Assist with tube feeding, escorting students and monitoring for all meals.

* Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.

* Attend meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. trainings, IEP meetings, emergency procedures, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.

* Confer with teachers on a regular basis for the purpose of accountability and assisting in evaluating special education student progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.

* Attendance at work is an essential function.

* Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.

EXPERIENCE:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

Education/Certification:

* High school diploma or G.E.D.

* Title 1 Funded Campus: 48 semester hours of college coursework from a regionally accredited college or university OR meets NCLB requirements for Highly Qualified Paraprofessionals

* Non-Title 1 Funded Campus: 30 semester hours of college coursework from a regionally accredited college or university OR three years of full-time work-related experience with special needs students in an instructional or child care facility

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

* Constructive and cooperative attitude toward the duties of the aide, the school, the staff and the students (ages 3-21) who have severe or multiple handicaps

* Ability to read, write and implement instructions designated by teachers/supervisors in order to meet IEP objectives

* Ability to follow directives and to perform tasks necessary to ensure the safety of students at all times

* Ability to communicate positively with students, both verbally and non-verbally

* Ability to change diapers, feed and care for children (ages 3-21) who may have disabilities

* CPI certified or ability to obtain/maintain CPI certification

* Knowledge of Structured TEACCH methodology or experience working in a structured learning environment
