JOB DESCRIPTION:

Primary

Purpose:

The primary function of a school braillist is to provide accessible instructional materials for students who are blind or visually impaired by transcribing, adapting, and producing materials in Braille and other accessible formats. The braillist ensures students receive classroom, testing, and educational materials in a timely manner to support equal access to the curriculum and compliance with educational accommodations and accessibility standards.

Support teachers, Orientation and Mobility Specialist, and campus staff /district-wide in creating accessible materials.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major Responsibilities and Duties

* Transcribing textbooks, worksheets, tests, and classroom materials into Braille

* Producing tactile graphics, charts, and diagrams

* Formatting materials according to Braille standards

* Collaborating with teachers and special education staff to adapt lessons

* Operating Braille embossers and assistive technology

* Proofreading Braille documents for accuracy

* Supporting students' access to instructional materials in a timely manner

* Maintain equipment and inventory of materials

* Strong communication (verbal and written), public relations, and interpersonal skills

* Able to work in a supportive, collaborative role with staff

* Strong problem-solving and organizational skills with attention to detail

Essential Job Functions

* Assist in the preparation, use, and maintenance of instructional materials and equipment.

* Assist with teacher-planned activities, exercises, and drills.

* Assist in record keeping and clerical duties.

* Attendance at work is an essential function.

* Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or Special Education Director.

* Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions.

* Travel to site(s) as assigned

Professional Growth and Development

* Participate in professional growth activities on a yearly basis, including workshops, in-services, and/or other available trainings for the purpose of increasing professional knowledge

* Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development by keeping current with professional reading materials and new research findings; and for attending appropriate professional meetings and conferences.

* Observe professional ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the Texas Education Agency Code of Ethics.

EXPERIENCE:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education /Certification Requirements:

* Valid Texas Driver's License

* Eligible for coverage under the district's vehicle insurance program

* Minimum of 48 college hours or high school diploma/equivalent plus pass a District Highly Qualified Assessment.

* Educational Aide Certification;
Fingerprinting Processing

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

* Knowledge of Unified English Braille (UEB)

* Familiarity with assistive technology

* Knowledge of Nemeth Code for math and science notation

* Braille embossers

* Ability to transcribe music Braille if needed

* Creating tactile graphics and raised-line diagrams

* Understanding formatting rules for textbooks, worksheets, and testing materials

* Strong proofreading and error-detection abilities
